Living in the faithful land of the sand (Saudi Arabia), one doesn’t really have many musical concerts and shows to choose from. Especially if you’re into some music that is often perceived as satanic prayers by the fundamental parasites that swarm the faithful land of the sand. Yes, rock music isn’t as popular here as it is worldwide and the only way you could experience such an art is by moving to a country like the United States or at least to be lucky enough to have a relative who studies, lives or resides there. Luckily, I did have a relative, which I can proudly claim has an amazing taste in music. During Christmas break, he would visit us with a bag full of gifts and presents which we looked forward to very eagerly. Though every year I used to get a musical CD along with his unending compliments that overhyped the band, it still used to be very exciting and worth the endless wait. But, the year 2000 was a bit different as instead of a CD, I got A DVD! I was way to happy and expressed my gratitude by tightly hugging my relative and saying ‘Thank You’ numerous times. All this might feel awkward now and nothing special or extraordinary but believe me, to a nine-year-old living in Saudi Arabia, the fact that you could listen, and view a concert from a disk, was overtly overwhelming and exciting to say the least. Metallica S&M (an abbreviation of Symphony and Metallica) was the title of the DVD that he brought. It was the first time that I was introduced to Metallica. I remember he went on and on about how the live concert was. I listened to him patiently and let my imagination go wild. I could see pictures of live concert in my mind as he described. I just wanted to watch and relish the DVD videos but unfortunately, but the wait was rather long since the only DVD player we had was in my Father’s “No kids allowed room”, a room with the biggest Television and stereo sound system money could buy. Although he only used it whenever there was a big soccer game, or whenever he felt like watching one of his old Clint Eastwood movies, we were not supposed to use it as and when we pleased. After endless childish begging, finally a conclusion was reached. The whole room was accessible only whenever he was at work. I remember the first day quite vividly and how I spent hours in school just looking at the back cover of the DVD, reading the song names like No leaf clover, until it sleeps and master of puppets. The songs, by the mere titles, sounded interesting, too rhythmic and forced me to imagine how they would sound like. I was impatient and restless. It was hard for me to concentrate on what my teachers or friends were saying. I had nothing else in my mind, but Metallica. Finally the bell finally rang, I raced back home and opened the DVD, slid it in player, took the remote, kicked back chose to start with the song called “one” thinking it’s a singe. Little did I know that the song would become my all time favorite and that I would cherish listening to it always. I was awed and hooked as soon as the visuals started playing. My endless wait had ended and I could see the performances of Metallica. I was way too excited and happy and much more before I realized, I was head banging and enjoying the music. The fact that surprised me the most and made Metallica my favorite band was that the songs were in tune and the way I had imagined them to be when I read their titles. I felt an instant connection with the music, the band and its members. The symphony started out with a smooth introduction along with gunshot noises. It was succeeded with James Hatfield’s (the vocalist) Lead guitar. Then slowly the other band members joined and made the most perfect piece of music I had ever heard. And when James Hatfield finally sang, that’s when I realized why Metallica was considered a band of rock legends. His voice and the lyrics absorbed my attention in a way that I had never encountered earlier in my life. “ I can’t remember anything can’t tell if this dream is true” that part mesmerized me, and his continued singing about the war in a really poetic way was commendable and all the more amazing was how they hit the right beats and produced the perfect sound over and over again. It was as if he was telling a story to the crowd who just sat and listened, I felt very much the part of that crowd. A story about a warrior who lost his limbs and was painfully wounded, who keeps repeating “Oh please god, help me”. The song had a special meaning and conveyed a very important message with utmost subtleness and beauty. It was as if James was reciting a story about a noble warrior. It made me feel sad and happy at the same time, it was an out of the world feeling, It was as perfect a mixture of entertainment and socially important message could get. After listening to “one” for almost an hour I decided to choose another song “Master of Puppets”. The amount of power that this song generates is unexplainable and hard to put into words. The crowd cheered and acted a part of the song. It was as if they were responding to James Hatfield’s charismatic Chants and were singing along with him. As he screamed, “Obey your master!” the crowd all responded obediently saying “master”. It was fast, powerful and mind-blowing. Even James fake laugh in the end was worth listening to. Every part, every note, every beat of the song was crafted with utmost perfection. James Hatfield’s vocals, Kirk’s solo’s and Ulrich’s insane drumming were some of the factors that gave Metallica their unarguable position as rock legends. The fact that S&M might never happen again just saddens me. Their Charisma was unmatched and their commitment was unquestioned. Although, I still watch that DVD religiously and regularly and consider it my favorite concert. I always wished to see Metallic performing live and this is something I will always regret for I never got an opportunity to attend their concert physically.
