Dear Congresswoman Ros-Lehtinen:
In line with the continued upward trend that exhibits rising rates of obesity in children, with a strong link to developing tendencies for preponderance to type 2 diabetes, as a promoter and advocate of good health, I would like to propose that the Bill to combat childhood obesity, as proposed by Congresswoman Marcia L. Fudge of the Ohio district, be similarly promoted in the local communities of South Florida.
As it was announced in the first session of the 113th Congress that the month of September was proposed to be designated as the National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month, I strongly believe that congruent with awareness is the need to take immediate action to effectively combat childhood obesity and type 2 diabetes. Most of the identified causes for these chronic illnesses include living a sedentary lifestyle, lack of promotion to engage in regular physical fitness, and the availability and access to junk food, instead of promulgating eating healthy food alternatives.
It is in this regard that I propose more stringent support to the bill to combat obesity through encouraging local health communities and schools within the South Florida district to enhance awareness on the strategies that would assist in preventing obesity and diabetes, as abovementioned. The schools could have a ‘combat childhood obesity drive’ through measuring students’ body weight before and after the program. Schools which exhibited the most significant improvement in minimizing obesity could be given incentives through scholarship programs or educational grants. Likewise, children who have exhibited the greatest weight loss during the program could be promoters and testimonies of good health through attesting that combatting obesity works towards improving the quality of life.
I believe that this advocacy is consistent with your stand in protecting the lives of children. I hope for your active and immediate support on this matter. The constituents and members of the local communities of South Florida share your vision of promoting health and improving the welfare of children through combatting obesity and type 2 diabetes, as proposed.
Thank you.
Respectfully yours,
