‘The undertakings: Life studies from the dismal trade,’ is a book by Thomas Lynch, who is a director of an undertaking company that is owned by his family. Thomas has first hand information on death, life and loss that people experience after their relatives or close ones has passed on to the afterlife. It is sad because he says in a short period of time he had to bury so many people, which was so sad as most of them were children. However, the issue or the statement in his book was not about the cold or the lifeless but on the living. How they would cope after their loved ones had passed on.
As Lynch was conducting his business of burying and cremating the loved ones. he kept his ears and eyes opened to listen and hear what the grieving were saying about the deceased in the vernaculars of grief and love. In this instance, Lynch stood between the living and the dead and he understood how those people felt as he could listen to their conversations on who was going to take care of the orphaned children left by their parents as well as why people committed suicide among other issues.
Contemplation of death in this case is how people view death and the void that is left in their lives after the persons they loved most passes on to the afterlife. During the contemplation the living, think of how they are going to deal with the loss. According to Lynch, he came to know that undertaking his father was doing was less to do with the dead person, and more to do with the living and how they would deal with the fact that a person had died. Therefore, Thomas learnt that it was not only about taking care of the dead, but more about helping the living cope with the loss of their loved one. The poets that Lynch writes shares the meaning and voices of love, life and death. As if his father said, the best thing was to make sure that the living knew how to deal with the loss that they were facing.
Death is the scariest thing that any person can experience. If a person has never lost a relative or a friend or mother, they cannot understand the feeling of loss. Family members arrange on how they are going to bury their friends, but what they forget is that there is life after the person has left. Therefore, they should find solutions as to how they are going to handle the death. Nobody knows who will die when or what will cause the death. Some die due to the act of God, illness, injury and accidents. Lynch in his book stated that in Michigan people died around the clock without any apparent preference of the day of the week, year or even month. He further stated that there was no favorite season, which people choose to die because nobody expects to die, and it only happens without anyone’s knowledge.
The people who die are like the people who had died before them and even the ones who will die after the dead will be the same as those who died before them. Therefore, people contemplate death before they die because they want to leave their family members comfortable without worry. Some even make plans on how they want to be buried in case they died, for instance, the man who eyed the cardinal job instructed Lynch that, in case of his death, he would not be buried in a bronze coffin nor orchids, limousines or roses. The man wanted to be buried in a plain pine box and a low mass with a pauper is grave, as he did not want pomp or circumstance. The reason why the man wanted to be buried in such a way was for the sole reason that he was an example of prudence, simplicity, austerity and piety.
The aspired cardinal was an example of a man who was contemplating on his death and had already made plans on how he wanted to be buried. He was a simple man and he did not want his burial to be a big deal as he said that he wanted simplicity. This shows that people spend too much to be buried, and they forget that when they die they are lifeless and they do not matter anymore. However, the problem is not the dead, but the living because they make a big deal on the burial of the deceased person, and they forget that life has to move on. However, some say that they are paying their last respects to the deceased, as they will never see them again.
People who contemplate their death are mostly in their deathbeds, and they do not have of living again or for long. They go to the extent of making a will where they give out all their properties. In the same will, they note down how and where they want to be buried. When people are contemplating death, they give out gifts to friends and families. By so doing, they ensure that the family members do not fight over the property the deceased has acquired in case he was rich. Considering that most of the people in the little Michigan town were rich, they had to make sure that their family members were comfortable, and their family was taken care of after they died. However, this was not the case for most people as others did not contemplate they would die young especially the early bloomers.
People do not know when to expect death knocking on their do way, as not all humans know in what form they are going to die. Therefore, not every person can contemplate on his death and plan how they are going to be buried. For instance, in this day we live in, people are suffering from various ailments, some which do not even have a cure and furthermore a person many go to the hospital and the doctors can say that they have a few days or months to live, but they end up living more than any person expected. For example, in the late 90s people with HIV/AIDS were only given a few months to live after they were diagnosed with the disease, but after people were told how to take care of their health people are living even up to 30 years with the disease. In this case, a person cannot contemplate when they are going to die.
Life is sacred, and we must suffer life reason being where choice is preserved we must suffer the preserved choices. For that, people must accept that at one point or another person around us is going to succumb to death. The living and people who have been left behind have to make the right choices to ensure that they live their lives to the fullest, before they die. Nobody knows that they will commit suicide, but due to challenges and the circumstances that life gives them; they choose to end their lives because they can no longer take what life has given them. The issue of the unborn whose life ends it before it even begins saddens most people because the fetus is not even given a chance to know how it feels to come to the world.
Death faces any person, no matter how rich a person is or how poor they are. The only difference between all this people is how or which method they choose to mourn the dead. Many people weep or pretend to weep; others hold out their feelings, and people do not understand what they feel about the loss they have suffered. In this case, the people need to find how to mourn their relative as it heals the soul and when they die, they want to be mourned. Sudden death is the worst, as people do not know how to handle the situation and in this case, the undertakers despite burying the death should find a way to handle the dead.
In conclusion, contemplation of death is something that people in the society will not stop doing as some want the best burials to carry out in their honor, and some do not have the opportunity to make a choice as to how they want to be buried. Therefore, it is good just to accept that life is short, and the right choices should be made to ensure that the life we live was beneficial to others. Death is sad, but the living has more to lose than the dead as the dead cannot be there to help. Therefore, people should weep for the dead when they die and find a way to move on with their lives as dead no longer matter they are just cold. Only their memories should be safeguarded, and their souls prayed for to ensure that the living finds peace.
