“The world is a book and those who do not travel read only a page,” said St. Augustine regarding the beauty and breadth of travel. I chose to attend this cultural performance event because I thought it would be a good way for me to learn about fashion around the world. An international fashion show was the event I attended in which cultural dishes and recipes, games and prizes, world music, and a dance performance were all part of this event. India’s fashion was highlighted as several models sported traditional Indian dress, which was colorful and beautiful. These same models danced to a Bollywood (i.e., India’s Hollywood) song, a major symbol of Indian culture. It was quite fascinating! The purpose of the event was to promote the multicultural club’s desire to have more cross cultural awareness experiences on campus. This event was similar to activities of other cultures by the fact that each culture has a unique style or fashion that represents the culture. While the difference may be the type of clothing and accessories worn and adorned, every culture has dress that distinguishes it from other cultures.
When I attended this event I felt amazed and inspired by the rich diversity of the world we live in. While I did not understand the language of the music being played, I enjoyed listening to it. The fashion show host spoke English so that was not a problem. Clearly I was in the right place at the right time. I did not understand why there weren’t more cultures represented because only Indian fashion was featured in the show. Although everything else appeared to be multicultural from the food to the attendees to the raffle questionnaire given to us. The most important thing I learned from this event is that when we celebrate diversity and the colorfulness of the planet, we open ourselves up to having wonderful friendships and connections with people from all over the globe. Life becomes bigger and richer than before.
Some unenjoyable aspects of this cultural activity were the fact that the fashion show did not seem to start at a time that everyone expected. We thought maybe the models weren’t ready or maybe they were waiting for more guests to arrive. But either way we certainly didn’t follow the protocol of American punctuality because there was plenty of time for mingling and eating. In a way, I felt like my time was being wasted. However, once the show started everyone’s attention was hooked on the models and dancers who represented their culture well. I noticed a little Indian girl getting excited by the performance and she would run around the room in laughter as if she wanted her chance to shine in the limelight.
Organizing an international fashion show for university students is a great way to serve the student body by enhancing their learning of world culture. We need to have more events like this for students to attend. It also gives the international students a platform to showcase their talents, tastes, and [cultural] treasures. Cross cultural dialogue is generated through this avenue and the overall campus climate is improved as a result. Some professors could even have their classes attend these events (and then report on it as we are doing for this current assignment) as part of class participation.
Attending this fashion show made me realize that I have so much more to learn and know about other cultures. So I would like to be exposed to ideas, people and events that differ from what I am used to seeing and knowing. The interaction with the Indian models in the fashion show was great. They were friendly, happy, and pleasant to be around and get acquainted with. Keeping an open mind is what this experience taught me most so that in the future I can avoid prejudgment and presumption when meeting people from other cultures. In summary, I would like to travel the world in order to become a true global citizen. Gospel singer Cece Winans said it best: “it’s a colorful world it’s a beautiful world that we live in.”
