As one reflected on the accurate and appropriate definition of love, one was made to realize that the complexity in providing a straightforward and simple meaning could actually be misleading. Love is a powerful emotion that comes from a person, and whose intensity, kind, level, and encompassing range depends on the role that the person assumes in a particular relationship. One hereby believes that the meaning of love is relative, subjective, and expansive depending on the perception of the giver to the recipient.
The simplest and least intense kind of love is a love felt between acquaintances. Due to the nature of the relationship that stems from newly established friendships and just recently introduced interactions, the feeling of love could be exhibited in such a shallow manner. There could be caring in terms of not wanting any injury or harm to befall that newly found friend; but other than that, the support, emotional bond, and intensity of interpersonal relationship is maintained on a purely platonic basis. In this scenario, love could be defined as an emotional bond newly established and shared to serve purely functional purposes.
Love could be elevated to a higher level in terms of the emotional feelings shared and established between family members and relatives; particularly among siblings and extended family members. This kind of love could likewise be exhibited in terms of dealing with friends. There is this greater genuine concern to be regularly updated of the holistic condition of these family members and relatives. The length of time one is acquainted and invited into the lives of these people influences the level, scope, and intensity of the love shared between them. For instance, one is deeply concerned of the welfare of a brother and sister; and their well-being continues to be part of one’s ethical, moral, and legal obligation.
A higher level of love is love for one’s parents, spouses, and children. Love for this special group of people is greater in depth and intensity. In one’s personal point of view, the love experienced for parents could be more intense during the phase of development that most needs their support: during childhood. At this stage, parents are the children’s source of unconditional love, particularly the love accorded by one’s mother. Love could be defined as unconditional in terms of being accorded without boundaries or without conditions. This kind of love could also be said to be exchanged between spouses; where despite challenges or trials, love is expected to be the binding force that would continue to unite them through life.
In sum, one argues that the meaning of love is relative, subjective, and expansive depending on the perception of the giver to the recipient. One has illustrated that love could be exhibited between acquaintances and friends at the simplest level, and to be elevated among family members, relative and friends. Love shared between parents, children and spouses is more intense and have been established, nurtured, and developed through time. The love that is therefore given or shared depends on how one person, the giver, feels towards another person. The kind, expectations for reciprocity, and the extent or depth of emotions felt considers the type of relationships the person establishes over time. A life without love could therefore me empty, since love gives purpose and direction as well as meaning to life.
