Democracy is the practice of governing wherein people select their rulers through election. For Plato, democracy is more or less, it is a straight democracy, where every male citizen votes in an assembly and decides the majority rule (elected government officials are chosen by allotment). However, why will this way of governing be a terrible thing? Is this way of governing relating to dictatorship or oligarchies? Wherein anywhere from one individual male to a small group of elites possess powers over all.
Plato demonstrated no fondness in a democracy (where the people detain power) because he alleged that not all members of the community were in a position of making decision wisely. As stated through Socrates, the platonic norm is that only part of the population in a legit city (those people identified as the philosophers) hold the value portion of the heart that desires for wisdom and truth. Since this portion postulate the majority of the philosophers, hearts, these people will chiefly endeavor for wisdom and truth. In addition, since the portion of their heart is rational, the governing cadre will be fair; assuring that the city they govern is legit.
Legitimacy do not postulate the basis of govern in a capitalistic community, and by extension, will have a minor responsibility in a democratic republic. In capitalistic governing, where free markets (not regulated by the government) are endorsed, consumers and retailers gather in the interchange of products and services. Money has an enormous impact in the community. For instance, United State of America’s power lies in its wealth. Wealth plays a significant role in U.S. policy element (where embargos and suction are used to pressure other nations), and U.S. internal affairs (where tax policies and government agreements disperse wealth to groups of citizens).
However, in the case of Plato, he never believed in wealth because he knew its power to corrupt. Plato believed that the community would always be happier without wealth. When confronted on how the city would protect itself without money, Socrates responded in the republic that bordering cities would avail in to their aid when pledged the spoils of war. This conversely in the present world of governing, in the title of advancing democracy; war is viewed as foundations of up surging national wealth. For example, manipulation of oil sources in Middle East nation is justified since the nations’ governments were overthrown to be modified in an image as preferable.
Leaders who are not motivated by legitimacy will find means to rationalize immoral actions using ends (up surged wealth or control) to validate the means. Circumstance of immoral actions involves the examples of the absent of attention given to the nation like Darfur and Rwanda wherein genocide occurs while Western countries turn a blind eye. Democratic countries understand no political gain to be from interference in foreign governments where acquitted individuals suffer bot no wealth is increased.
In conclusion, in the case of Plato, the Republic proposed the vision that morality overshadows the rationality. If the wealth is not at the foremost front of the community’s value system, morality edicts that all communities will be on equal stability. In consequences, a community will have lesser wars since there would be monetary increase to be desired and mutual respect across countries would prohibit war being used as a way of controlling other countries.
