The Euskadi Ta Askatasuna known as ETA is an armed separatist and nationalist organization which was founded in 1959. The aim of the original Eta was the promotion of traditional Basque culture; however, they have evolved into a paramilitary group whose goal is to fight for the independence of the greater Basque Country. The ETA has become the major organization of the Basque National Liberation Movement which is chiefly responsible for the Basque conflict.
This is not the first time the ETA is declaring a ceasefire; they have declared ceasefire a couple of time in the past. The first ceasefire by ETA was in 1989 which they broke, they declared another one in 1996 and broke it too, in 1998 and 2006 the story remains the same as they declared and subsequently broke the ceasefire. This present ceasefire by the ETA has been on since September 5 2010 and on October 20 2011 a definition cessation of all armed activity was declared by the ETA.
Although the aim behind the 2010 ceasefire was due to the groups resort to use peaceful democratic means to achieve its aim, that’s what they make us all believe. The fact that the ETA had in the past broke their ceasefire makes it hard to fully accept that they won’t go back on their word. Though, we have a cause to believe that the current ceasefire offered by the ETA has genuine staying power due to the fact that this would give them more international recognition and encourage the international community to take the concerns of the ETA more serious.
