Abstract
The subject of eating dog meat has been controversial for many years and debate is still ongoing in contemporary societies. The two opposing sides argue based the traditions and culture of our ancestors that view dog eating as a source of nutrients and other theoretical benefits and the contemporary society argument considers the dog as man’s loyal companion. The arguments could however not be generalized because of people’s different point of view; some may agree, some may differ while others may stand a neutral ground. China and Korea are well known for their consideration of dog meat as a delicacy a way of life that has been recognized for several years. This culture is criticized by many who consider cultural transformation and aspects of civilization but the Koreans are not about to abolish their traditions citing that they only eat dog meat on special occasions. Presently, there are no scientific evidence concerning benefits of dog meat in the human body and beliefs that exist may as well be considered as myths. Exploration of both sides of the argument led to my conclusion that dog meat can only be consumed if the society has no alternatives of survival. My argument is based on my perspective that dogs have been man’s companion and protector from time immemorial and if consumers keep demanding for their meat, then the producer’s treatment towards dogs would transform to be more violent due to higher expectations from the consumer. Although we should respect our traditions, it is equally important to consider social, economic and political transformations where there exist more concrete senses of facts and proofs offered by scientific investigations.
