The subject of the Electoral College has caused much debate over the past few decades within the United States, especially during election time. The reasoning behind the debate is the fact that the voters’ individual selections are not actually tallied up to determine the winner of the election, but rather their votes are translated into Electoral College votes to determine the winner. In many cases, the winner of the Electoral College votes is not actually the candidate who earned the majority of individual votes from the country’s voters.
One alternative which could be substituted for the Electoral College process of voting for President would be to have all states pass legislation to award all of that state’s electoral votes to the candidate with the most votes in the national popular vote. The only way in which this alternative plan would work is if states holding a combined number of Electoral College votes of more than 270 agree to take part in the plan. The expected outcome of this new plan would be that the winner of the national popular vote would be awarded with the winning number of Electoral College votes, thus becoming the winner of the entire election.
Another alternative, although highly unlikely to occur, would be to simply amend the Electoral College process within the Constitution, to abolish the practice altogether. This alternative would be merely impossible to happen, mainly because to do so would require approval from two-thirds of the United States Congress members, in addition to ratification from three-quarters of the states. With so many United States citizens who live and die by the Constitution, this option to change the Electoral College voting system seems like such an impossible feat to be won.
