In this paper, I will focus on my analyses of my observations from our Philosophy 103 lectures. I will focus on areas like the way how the classroom is organized and how the students show their discipline or the lack of it at all times, and how a good learning environment is maintained. .
When it comes to maintaining an organized class lecture, I could say that our block is the best. The class does not usually start unless everyone is ready to pay attention to what the speaker in front is about to say or if somebody from the class is busy doing something that is not directly related to the subject in any way. The moment the lecture starts, it could be seen that everyone is paying attention. This could be attributed to the fact that everyone wants to learn something from the speaker in front; they want to acquire enough knowledge that would save them from having a low mark on quizzes and recitations. If no one is eager to learn, then chances are we won’t be able to see anyone listening to the lecture. School-aged children go to school to be learning and be educated. Parents spend enormous amount of time and resources just to send their kid to school and their efforts would be in vain if their kid just slacks off and does not focus on acquiring as much knowledge as he can. Society dictates that in order to have a good and stable life in the future, one needs to have a degree, then a good job, and a large annual salary. Society dictates that for an individual to be successful, that one has to be educated first.
The entire class follows a strict schedule of activities. This could be due to the fact that the school serves as an early training ground for students. Every beginning of a class lecture, the attendance of every student is usually checked. If a student fails to identify himself for some reason within that period, he could be either late or absent. I think this is because when the time comes that the students will already have to work, they would not be able to find any excuses regarding lateness and other time management issues.
Not all students came from a similar socioeconomic status, ethnic group; and in the same manner, not all students have the same ability range, learning style, or linguistic background. I even think that some of my classmates are working students or are not so financially stable that they can hardly have access to the internet to check each other’s emails. It is common for our block to use the internet and other unconventional methods of dissemination information that is relevant to the course or the other way around. This is mainly because of the fact that the students or the school as a whole is trying to adjust to the effects and benefits of globalization. According to Charles Darwin, anyone who does not know how to adapt will become extinct.
I was also able to observe how everybody teaches everyone how to be socially-disciplined inside the classroom which I think has something to do with the different aspects of socialization. For example, we have this unique house rule about eating. It says that anyone is allowed to eat as long as it does not distract others who are eager enough to listen to the lecture. No one wants to get distracted from the sounds of chips and crackers being grinded by a student’s teeth. It’s a liberal way of training the class how to be socially-disciplined. Again, this could be due to the fact that everybody wants to learn and for an individual to learn, all forms of distractions should first be minimized.
The most important thing for me is the consistency. All of these strategies that are being used in the class that are being used in discussions will surely be useless if there is a lack consistency. I have observed and analyzed the way how the class manages and handles different situations and I could say that everyone from our block is a responsible kid simply because we were taught how to be one. Now, we could have an entirely different meaning of taking responsibilities
In one of our Philosophy lectures, we talked about the importance of virtues in the society. I can attest to the fact that the professor and everyone in the class serves as a good example to students from other classrooms or even schools. Setting a good example to the students is one of the best ways how to teach them to become something.
