This is a response to a bumper sticker. The response is to the “Fuck Weed Legalize My Mom” phrase. The message is from a young person who presumably is a legalized American Citizen most certainly by birth but whose parents are not considered American citizens.
The phrase “Fuck Weed Legalize My Mom” has been used by people in the US to urge the authorities to legalize the citizenship of immigrants living in the country and uphold their rights. Instead of the government focusing too much on efforts to fight the use of cannabis (weed), it should seek ways to improve the livelihoods of immigrants. Proponents of this campaign argue that the use of cannabis in the US is widespread and it is useless to fight its use since about 18 states have legalized one or more uses of cannabis.
A Texas-based rapper Snow Tha Product is one of those who used the phrase in her music to urge authorities to legalize the citizenship of her parents (youtube.com). The phrase has also been used in banners and placards during demonstrations to urge the government to review laws affecting immigration. The eye-catching message has also been printed on t-shirts which have gained massive popularity especially among young people who are pro-legalization of cannabis while urging the government to accommodate their immigrant parents.
Though the government should fight against drug abuse, it should also give equal if not more weight to upholding the rights of immigrants. This is especially so for those immigrants who have lived in the country for a considerable period of time.
The “Fuck Weed Legalize My Mom” is a blatant and seemingly rude way in which many young Americans borne to immigrants are urging the government to accord equal weight to immigrant issues as it has given to the fight against cannabis and other drugs.
