Project management involves a careful planning and execution of various operations and procedures of the project with the aim of completing a quality project within the set time and with as minimum cost as possible. It involves integrating various sections and ensuring that every section of the project is completed within the set period of time schedule and in the required quality and to collectively complete the entire project within the anticipated project life cycle. A project life cycle is the entire process and steps that are followed towards the execution and completion of the entire project and it includes the process of planning implementing, completion and monitoring the entire project activities.
The essential framework of a project is defined by the use of a project life cycle that defines the phases/steps which the entire project has to go through from the project initiation stage, planning, implementation and completion stage as well as the monitoring processes for each individual activity of the project. As a way of ensuring that a project is completed successfully, it is essential for the project manager in engineering field to come up with a plan on how the project life cycle will be. Initial step involves coming up with the project objectives and conducting a feasibility study to identify the possible ways of achieving the set objectives. This stage has to get approval of the proposed project so as to initiate planning of the entire project activities.
Planning phase on the essential requirements of the entire project including sketching the structure, calculating the total costs and expected completion time is the second and most important project step. It also involves integration of the entire operations through defining the scope of the project also known as the work breakdown structure is initiated. This involves breaking down the entire project into smaller sections of activities and the sequence in which these activities will be implemented in order to achieve the major objective of the project. At this stage, the project team for each is also identified and allocated to various project breakdown sections. Defining the project scope and the team is essential in ensuring that the implementation and monitoring process is easy as the time, cost and quality of each individual project is clearly outlined.
The Implementation process is the crucial part of the project where the planned scope is executed. During this stage, it is important to constantly monitor the progress of each individual project to ensure that the work is performed according to the plan. Effective communication is also essential for gathering information from the project teams, reporting the progress and issuing guidelines on what needs to be done and how. Constant evaluation of each individual project is also necessary as a way of ensuring that each section is completed within the set time.
The entire project lifecycle involves a careful management of the project scope to ensure that every section of the project is completed within the set period of time and with minimum costs and expected quality. Managing the human resource is also essential to ensure that employees execute their respective duties appropriately as a way of achieving the project objectives. Effective communication with all the stakeholders is an essential practice that the project manager should adopt in the entire project management framework as it is through constant and effective communication process that all the project stakeholders including the vendors, workers and management are informed on all the aspects involved in the project. Project control is achieved through constantly reviewing the performance of the project from the start to the finish to ensure that every activity is in accordance with the initial plan.
