Discussion
After seeing the book in the form of pictures, I feel that my understanding has improved. For example, after looking at the maps of the voyages one and three, I got an idea of where the Lilliput and Blefescu were possibly located. The maps added to my understanding because they create the idea that there were true journeys that were travelled. I have also learned that it is like the author did not want people to know he had written the book. The reason is that Jonathan Swift did not include his name in the page where book information like title is given. The images on how Gulliver was entertained and also entertained small Lilliputians has also added to my understanding of the book, although I had not expected his hosts were such tiny.
We are not in Kansas anymore
Dorothy finds herself and her dog Toto in a strange place; they are no longer in Kansas. Although in a new place, she seems to be enjoying the idea that they might be over the moon. Her joy seems to end when lady asks her whether she is a witch, because a witch has just struck. She is evidently shocked to learn that beautiful witches do exist. The witch tells her that only bad witches are ugly.
Lawyers, Guns, and Money
Swift placed information about lawyer’s misuse of language near the information about the effects of money because the two are similar. The similarity is that both language and money can be used influence an outcome about something. For example, lawyers may use language in an appealing and convincing way to make people view issues and behaviors in their society in some way. Similarly, money is a resource than can be used to influence how people respond to situations in their society, as well as the kind of behaviors they engage in.
Monkey planet
Both the Gulliver’s Travels and the Planet of the Apes may be compared. The first reason is that the two involve human being travelling strange lands with sub-human beings. For example, Gulliver travels to a country with little people while the Planet of the Apes is based on the novel where the main character travelled to a planet inhabited by apes than were more advanced than humans. The humans were more of animals that did not speak. Like Gulliver who finds himself in a foreign land, the astronaut in the Planet of Apes crash-lands in a foreign land where the apes have developed into more advanced creatures, overtaking humans in terms of intelligence. Therefore, the apes are controlling the humans, who are unable to speak. The two works are highly satirical.
