Don't worry, be happy, words that we hear all too often, yet fail to make good on. We, as human beings, like to give different emotions different meanings. Happiness is one such emotion. For one man, happiness is making ends meet and living a life that is both peaceful and relaxing. For another man though, happiness has to do with being larger than life, and as such, making ends meet is simply not enough. Truth be told, a topic as personal as happiness is bound to result in varying definitions. Yet, there seems to be a bit of universality in what we term as happiness. Yes, looking at happiness from a micro viewpoint, we are bound to get varying views, but, the macro side of things results in an almost general definition. Simply put then, happiness is a sense of well being, and that sense of well being can arise from making millions to making somebody's day.
There are thousands amongst us that rate the presence of a family as everything that happiness is. For such people, being close to loved ones, giving and getting love in return is all that matters. No amount of money or worldly achievements comes close to matching the sheer amount of satisfaction and joy that having a family provides. These people are incomplete without a family, and their families are what gives them hope and the will to live. Therefore, no matter how hard things get economically, people who value the importance of having a family breathe a sigh of relief in the knowledge that they have their families to back them up whenever they are down. And, come to think of it, there are fewer better things in life than having the knowledge that no matter where you go, you will have somebody to care for you. A sense of togetherness is what a family provides, and for many, that is priceless. The late Princess Diana once said "Family is the most important thing in the world". The princess's words show that family matters, no matter how strong, powerful, and independent you may be.
While a family is all what some people want from life, others define love as what constitutes happiness. Being loved, and loving somebody, involves a broader set of people than just the family. You can be loved by a family member, a friend, or even your colleagues. The truth is that being accepted for what you are and not being showered with unconditional love provides a sense of inner joy that words simply cannot describe. To learn how much being loved matters, you simply have to experience the whole thing. Be it the love for God, the love for family, the love for friends, the love for nature, love is necessary for a happy life. The sheer importance of love in life can be gauged from the fact that many rich people feel incomplete even with all the wealth they have. Indeed, love breeds life, and as the Great Mahatma Gandhi put it "Where there is love, there is life".
There are some however, that value success over everything else. Most people though, have a single minded approach to success. For instance, the common man would rate success as having a big house, a high paying job, a beautiful car, and the list goes on. Although there is some amount of truth to this definition of success, the fact is that success has more to it than just external accomplishments. This is where inner satisfaction comes in. Inner satisfaction stems for smaller things, like helping a blind person cross the road. While we relate success to happiness though, there are a few who believe that happiness is what leads to success in the first place. For instance, in a hypothetical situation, a happy person would be much more likely to concentrate better at work than a person who is sad and has worries on his mind.
No matter which way we look at it though, there is little doubt about the fact that happiness is what we are all after in this world. Yes, even though one individual might not want to earn millions and have a respected social circle, but another individual would want that, the reality is that we are all in the pursuit of happiness, albeit, in our own ways. A life that is full of joy and happiness is a life well lived, and even science proves that. According to research, the happier a person is, the higher the amount of antibodies produced (50% to be exact). Sadness, on the other hand, destroys life. It is for this very reason that we should strive to make ourselves and others around us, as happy as we possibly can. The Great Dalai Lama knew all too well the importance of being happy, saying "The purpose of our lives is to be happy".
