Describe who the Europeans who entered these areas were? The first wave of Europeans who entered the Americas were explores and seamen. The next wave was Europeans who were looking for the promised riches of the new world what we can call adventurers and profiteers. The final wave was settlers who were looking for a new life for one reason or another. Which specific Native American groups did they encounter? Algonquin, Anasazi, Chinook, Choctaw, Chumash, Comanche, Creek Delaware, Lenape, Mohawk, Mojave, Osage, Seneca, Shoshone, Ute, Cheyenne, Pueblo were the Communities in North America. When did they first enter these areas and why? What was their motivation? In 1492 Christopher Columbus stumbled upon America while looking for a shorter route to India. The primary motivation was land and adding treasures to an ever hungry empire. How did their specific European context shape the approach they took when dealing with the Native Americans they encountered? Europeans had a racists attitude toward anyone who wasn’t white and they were not considered human. They were considered somewhere between monkey and human. How did they approach the process of exploration, conquest, settlement, and consolidation of these areas? They used the aboriginal population to explore the territory. Then they used force to take whatever they wanted. How successful were they? Once settled. Describe the colonies? They were very successful due to their superior weapons. They established rudimentary settlements that developed into villages then town. The relationship with the mother country was via trade and the public private partnership between companies and the state. Which basically operated within the colonies and ran them as businesses and the state owned the land and was paid tax on the goods produced for European consumers. Did the way they dealt with Native Americans change over time? The natives went from being guides and helpers to obstacles and were systematically wiped out (genocide). They used disease, warfare, and treaties to create space for themselves on native land. They also virtually wiped out the Buffalo population which was their main source of lively hood. What were the effects of European presence in these regions on the Native American population? The population dramatically decreased to shadows of their former selves. How did the Native American population react? The population tried to fight the Europeans and went to war with them.
