- How did President Hoover respond to the Great Depression?
President Hoover did not increase the control of government on the economy. Instead, President Hoover encouraged business owners to make sure that the wages given to their employees were higher. President was of the view that if the wages remained higher the purchasing power of the US citizenry would not be affected. However, this did not work well for business owners; they had to reduce the sizes of their workforces so that they would maintain high wages. With all the layoffs taking place the purchasing power of the general public declined thereby causing businesses to lay off more workers. Therefore, President Hoovers Keynesian approach to the Great Depression did not work to alleviate the suffering that people were experiencing at the time.
