Holistic Leadership
Workshop Summary
A large proportion of the American population is in dire need for guidance on how to keep fit. The workshop sought to justify this claim. It provided fundamental information geared towards making people to adopt serious dietary measures to ensure the well-being of their bodies and their productivity as well. One of the major reasons that call for intervention in the dietary patterns of many Americans is the increase in the prevalence of overweight and obese individuals. Research has shown that in 1961, only 20% of Americans were overweight and this has increased to 33% in 2010. This phenomenon has been observed not only in adults but also in children whereby the prevalence of obesity among children has tripled over the last five decades. This shows that the fight against fat that began in 1990 has not been effective in curbing the problem. Owing to this, the workshop sought to provide new approach(es) on how to deal with the phenomenon and help individuals remain healthy. The workshop not only gives a detailed approach on how to acquire a healthy weight or rather life style but also on how to keep it to ensure its sustainability.
Practical application
The workshop provided useful information and skills on how to acquire and maintain a healthy body weight. With the introduction of the paleo, zone and the paleo-zone, one is able to know what he/she should take, the frequency of consuming certain foods and their impact in the body. For instance, the workshop explains the kind of foods that we should take as well as those we should not consume. A proper diet should consist of sufficient fresh fruits and vegetables, lean meat, monounsaturated fats as well as seafoods. This is further summarized in the provisions of a meal in the Zone, which comprises of 30% carbohydrates, 30% fat and an equal proportion of proteins (lean meats and seafood/fish). It also provides the amount of water one is supposed to consume as well as the frequency of water intake. It also provided a list of foods that we should avoid which include products that contain chemicals such as High Fructose Corn Syrup and margarine. Generally, people should avoid processed food products ranging from cereals, dairy products to sugars and sweeteners. With such information, one is able to make well-informed decisions about the foods that he/she is going to take as far as maintaining a healthy body weight is concerned.
Personal impact
The information provided in the workshop will be helpful in enhancing my personal leadership profile in many ways. With the information, I will be able to formulate my diet properly. This is essential in enabling me to avoid any disorders that can lower my efficiency in executing my duties. Such disorders include obesity, cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes, hypertension and gout a combination normally referred to as syndrome X (Duyff, 2006, p. 230). Additionally, with the knowledge I gained from the workshop, I will be able to advice my employees on how to manage their diets in order to remain healthy. For those who are already overweight, the information will enable them stop gaining excessive body fat and begin to loosing the excess fat in their body. This will not only keep them away from several disorders related to excessive weight but also increase their efficiency at work. The information is very useful in my planning of activities for all the staff since it requires one to have some time for workouts. I will ensure that I alter the work schedule to slot some time for workouts and allocate some funds to purchase the necessary equipment for such.
