The movie is based on the historic Bellevue hospital. The hospital is located in New York and it generally associated by psychiatric illnesses. The movie is completely based on this hospital including the diseases used as referral themes in the film. The film revolves around diseases, Medicare, relationships and characters of the cast in the movie (Harris, 2008). The movie is also based on the historic depth of the Bellevue hospital which is known for its prowess in medication and offering medical services to thousands of people in its environment.
The movie highlights the tribulations of Angela: a patient in the hospital suffering from bipolar depression. Her condition is not bad but whenever it is provoked she reacts to it significantly. The fact that she misses her father makes the condition even worse. At one point in the movie she was taking about her father and her mental condition changed due to extreme depression (Harris, 2008). On realizing these effects staff in hospital became cautious when approaching her during her time at the hospital.
The movie also is an inclusion of how mental illness can exist in a family line for many years. This is proven by the character of Cheryl. Cheryl is a patient at the hospital suffering from acute mental illness. She has a lovely character but her condition makes her unfit for a normal life. She has a compact relationship with her psychiatrist who is the few people who could understand her body language. As a form of support and appreciation, her psychiatrist gets her a new pair of glasses which she loved so much. The glasses remain the most significant belonging she had in the hospital. It is also evident from the movie that Cheryl’s condition was inherited. Her family had a strong history on mental illness.
In another amazing character in the film, Greg is introduced to the act. Greg also has a mental condition that makes him hallucinate and have wild imaginations. In his childhood he was a very creative but showed mild signs of mental instability (Harris, 2008). With age the condition became worse and now he is suffering from a very serious mental illness. In one of the occasions in the movie, Greg had this assumption that he was God. He believed that everyone on earth should be thankful to him for their existence. This took a while before he could from the dream. The staff in the hospital did not react negatively towards the behavior since they understood her condition.
In the practice psychiatrists based their medication on the behavior of the patient. This was mostly evident in patient suffering from mental illnesses. In these patients, their reaction to situations needed to be kept under medication. However, in some cases their reactions were out of hand and psychiatrists had to overdose on the patients. The overdose was meant to reduce the reactions and calm nerves in patients suffering from mental conditions. in one case evident in the film, Brian reacted very violently towards the doctors and other patients. This forced the doctors to pit him away in seclusion and under heavy medication.
The film holds much significance in the setting of the location of the film. Across the community people discuss how important the hospital has been in the community. Different people of all ages in the community have once visited the hospital and applauding its expertise and reliable staff. In a single day the hospital receive more than 30 patients for diagnosis. The specific range is about 30 to 50 patients per day. This shows of how much importance the hospital is in its surrounding community.
In general, the movie highlights the significance of a mental hospital in a community. To make the plot more interesting it involves different characters with different metal conditions to create a movie which can be easily be related to the society.
