The interview was scheduled for quality assurance manager in General Motors automobile company. The manager has worked in that position in the company for a period of six years. He has worked for engineering and automobile companies for over fifteen years totaling to twenty-five years working experience. He has an a rich academic profile being a holder of associate degrees in mechanical engineering and business management, a master’s degree in business management and a doctorate in organizational leadership. His weighty academic profile has enabled him to soar to great heights and land to such a prestigious position. His profession has enabled him understand the needs of the company including the customers and price, delivery and products expectations. He is in a position to manage the company with a goal of customer satisfaction through quality products. His skills in organizational leadership give him the potential of establishing unity of direction and purpose to the organization. This is evident by him attitude of leading by example. He has a clear vision on the future of the organization and sets the pace in establishing ethical roles and values in the organization.
The rationale of considering to interview quality manager in General Motors was informed by the preference interviewing of someone rooted completely on managerial career and stabilized in a big company. Subordinate employees praise him for valuing them by collaborating with them hence integrates personalities and ideas. Employees need recognition by their superior a quality that he possesses. His success lies on the team playing with different groups in the company, being a peacemaker and skilled with conflict resolution techniques. The company has recorded increased productivity every year and tremendous progress since the time he got into office.
Groups in an organization are vital as they help in opportunities such as socialization, teamwork and competition. When questioned about his insights towards the idea of groups in an organization, he noted, “Groups teach us to cooperate with others and sacrificing our own advantage to maintain the group’s work.” He clarified that groups build interrelations by making individuals learn beneficial life skills such as defending one’s opinions in a healthy and more professional manner. He also argued that groups foster competition that results to improved overall productivity in an organization.
I sought to know his managerial principles that have rendered him successful. He had many things to say on this question since his principles towards his careers mould him in his position of work. He assumes process and system approach to management, a customer-focused strategy and passionate to continual improvement. All these principles integrated give a wholesome manager who is determined to ensure that the company is stable and progressing. When working in business groups, self-motivation and diligence among each member of the group is important. He challenges the autocratic approach of leadership discrediting the need pushing each other around arguing that in a group, each member should be reliable and dependable since individual efforts are equally important. Employees feel secure with a manager with integrity, as they know he will fight for their rights and treat them in a fair manner.
My interviewee stated that fostering employees’ stability in the organization is essential because it enhances reliability and mastery of operational procedures, which result to improved quality. As the market of the products increases, there is competition from similar companies hence management of the company needs to strategize their own culture to conquer the market. Groups in this company are of different sizes and types cutting across several functions, contexts, internal processes and external linkages. They promote the company with information, knowledge, and create networks for individuals and similar companies. This translates to a collective commercial relationship success through the ability of operating their business in multicultural dimensions of different related companies.
He had a clear-cut reason as to why these groups are important and reasons for their utilization. He stated, "Groups promote and advocate the interests of the company, strategize on how to draw and retain businesses as well as lead leadership development.” In addition, when individuals are organized in groups they discuss and advise management regarding essential regulations that affecting the firm, create fiscal development initiatives, build up strategies to prepare the labor force, and promote consumer growth.
Utilization of groups is through spearheading the visions of the organization as they give the company’s biggest idea and its strategies. Each group work independently, towards achieving the vision. Without vision, groups will lack inspiration of productivity and consumers of our products will not be able to understand the quality of our products. Communication skills are very vital for a quality assurance manager. He cannot communicate to everyone individually therefore, groups work as a link to communication. Whichever means of communication one uses such as email, memos or notices, the manager address the relevant group solely. These groups also have their representatives that link the manager who communicate on their behalf following the hierarchy.
The company has several groups and they all must work in hand to realize progress in the company. Leaders from all the groups schedule meetings so that they evaluate their achievements and downfalls. These groups are both internal and external. External groups mostly work towards searching for the market as well as advertising the products while the internal work towards production. External groups also work as sub companies or branches that link the main company to the international market. Most of them source for market through advertising on behalf of the main company. Each group therefore has its mandate to support the growth of the company right from subordinate casual workers, professionals such as engineers, accountants, managers, auditors among others and the executive committees. Employees elect their colleagues to facilitate work groups; some are because of their professional backgrounds and on ethical grounds. There are no specifications on the facilitators unless on aspects that need professionalism.
Global competition, innovation and consolidation create pressure, which influence the creation of groups fundamental in building blocks of General Motors Company. The need for these groups necessitates diverse expertise, skills and experience, which should have rapid, adaptive and flexible response. Groups are the key implementers of all these requirements. These globalised operations through acquisitions, expansion, mergers and joint ventures create importance in mixed and cross-cultural groups. Advancement of the internet has promoted links to individuals, groups complementing companies as well as world market virtually distributed in time and space. Furthermore, individuals in these groups perform different tasks, share common objectives, show role interdependencies, interact socially, manage their group’s boundaries and rooted on the group hence influencing the broader entity.
The interviewee would prefer groups that deal with quality production, policy making and managerial. This is because of his profession, which has equipped him with knowledge on these sectors. He understands employees’ needs and expectations, communicates well and motivates them leading to employees’ satisfaction in working conditions hence a positive work orientation. He is also in a position to solve problems employees and groups encounter while working by accepting responsibility and ownership to solve problems. He also seeks openings to make enhancements, and develop knowledge, competencies, and experience. He is innovative a trait that promotes advancements on the organization’s objectives focusing on quality of the products thus a representation of the company to local and the international community. These make group members proud, being part of General Motors as a company.
