In her report “Reports of our Deaths Have Been Greatly Exaggerated: Reconsidering the Curator”, Nancy Villa tries to explore the changing roles in curatorship. It’s such interesting to note that curators are still struggling with the task of redefining their roles in the museum sector. In Nancy Villa’s account of what she experienced, she says the number of alliances has evolved both extrinsically and intrinsically. To some degree, there has been a change of the role of the curator within a museum. Elizabeth Schlatter notes that there is a dominating mentality that the curatorship has increasingly become so inclusive. She goes ahead to state that the recent Nancy Villa’s and others’ insights has broadened the understanding of the curatorial practice.
Christina Kreps carries on with the discussion in her book, “Curatorship as Social Practice”, by exploring the holistic approaches that have situated the curators at the intersection point of people’s relationship with objects. Kreps further describes the evolutions of ways the museums have contextualized the understanding of the social dimensions of curatorial practice. In the “Code of Ethics-Curators”, 1985 issue, the Curator’s Committee of Association of Museums clearly encapsulates the responsibilities and roles of the curators. It sets the guidelines of the Curatorial responsibilities across all perspectives. There have been quite a number of discussions with regards to the roles of the curators.
The topics are still subject to discussion as the roles of this group of employees’ remains in the state of confusion. In some postings, it’s stated that the curator’s responsibilities would be a collection of artefacts, analysis of current collection and documentation as well as researching on the topics of interests.
