I believe that the safer a leader makes a situation, the higher he/she can raise the challenge. A leader should create a conducive environment for production, distribution and marketing of products. The employees should feel that their jobs are secure. This will motivate them, thus producing to their optimum as well as promote sound decision making without fear. In such an environment, the employees are also challenged to work hard in return for the motivation. He should involve appropriate personnel in terms of skills to enhance quality and efficiency.
A leader should not give people goals but directions on how to achieve the already set goals. He should clearly give the set target in terms of volume and time to be taken. He should not ask the employees on the methods of production but give direction to produce in a particular way; not to ask employees on the methods of distribution but to order distribution to be carried out through certain channel. A leader should also give the preferred channels of product promotion so as to counter competition.
A leader should encourage dissenting views. This will facilitate comprehensive decision making and ensure that the views of each and every employee are evaluated and if possible, put into consideration. A leader who does not encourage dissenting views and results to making decisions single handedly is likely to meet rebellion during implementation.
On the other hand, a leader should build an environment to extend not just people’s aspirations but sensibilities. In an organization, it is impossible to promote people’s aspirations due to conflicting interests. However, people’s sensibilities should be well catered for as a way of promotion.
Moreover, a leader should build emotion in the organization. People should be self-driven to attend to their duties. The employees should be results oriented.
Finally, the leader should encourage accountability over responsibility. For instance, since time is a resource, one should account on how he/she spent the time allocated in a day. It is easier to quantify accountability than responsibility. Accountability also avoids misuse of resources and their embezzlement.
