Sequence of Instructional Activities
1. Identification of Student Prerequisite Skills Needed for the Lesson:
This section will involve telling the students the purpose of the lesson. The necessary skills required for the students will be identified. It will also involve a review of the vocabularies that were previously needed. At the end of this procedure, a connection between the previous lesson and the current lesson will be made. This will take around 5 minutes.
2. Presentation of New Information or Modeling:
This will take around twenty minutes. Here, the teacher will introduce the vocabulary concepts using the vocabulary elaboration strategy. The actual teaching about vocabularies will take place in this section. The vocabulary elaboration strategy is one that involves the use of a notebook where students will be reading to familiarize themselves with vocabularies. The students will make notes of vocabularies and their explanation. The vocabularies in these notebooks will be elaborated with the help of the teacher. Since all examples, definitions and explanations of vocabularies will be documented in notebooks, the elaboration strategy will be important in teach each of the vocabulary concept terms. The students will be assessed based on the vocabularies written in their notebooks. They will therefore be asked many questions to test whether they have understood the subject matter.
3. Guided Practice:
The teacher will be guided by a guide book.
4. Independent Student Practice:
The students will be given time to ask questions especially in the areas where they have not understood. This will take approximately 5 minutes.
5. Closing Procedure:
This event will involve a review of what has been done. During this period, the teacher will have the chance to tell the students what will be covered in the next lesson. This will take approximately five minutes.
Pedagogical Strategy (or Strategies):
The following strategies will be used to teach the following concept terms:
I. Examples- Here, direct instructions will be used to explain the representatives of vocabulary words.
II. Definitions- The dictionary will be used to show the many explanations of various vocabulary words.
III. Synonyms- The dictionary will also be used to explain the use of diverse words having one meaning.
IV. Analogies- The strategy that will be used here is direct instructions. This will help in explaining the meaning of two vocabulary words that are similar.
Differentiated Instruction:
The disabled, especially the blind will be included in the lesson by introducing brails in the classroom.
Student Assessment/Rubrics:
Students will be asked questions from time to time during the lesson to make sure that they meet the objectives of this lesson.
Questions and Answers
1. The instructional setting of the class was set in a way that there were only ten students. The subject of the lesson was English literature. The topic of the lesson was vocabulary concepts. The students were arranged in three rows since the population was not large.
2. I did not deviate from my prepared lesson plan since it acted as a guide for my lesson. Deviating from the lesson plan would disintegrate the lesson procedures.
3. The vocabulary elaboration strategy used in the lesson relates to direct instruction since it involves the use of vocal instructions that are made directly to the students.
4. In the evaluation of the strategies used in the lesson presentation, it is notable that they were effective in the explanation of the vocabulary concept. The thinking process that was involved in the evaluation involved a review of how the lesson was executed.
5. The use of structured notes is one of the vocabulary strategies that can be used in the execution of the lesson plan. This strategy can be effective since it gives direction and uniqueness in the execution of the plan.
6. The vocabulary instructional strategy used in my lesson involved the use of dictionaries, unlike the strategy used in the observed video. The strategy used in the video was comprehensive instructions. This strategy involves a clear explanation of the vocabulary concepts until all the students knew how to use the vocabulary words. The teacher in the video explained the vocabulary terms using simple words to ensure that each student understood the subject matter. I considered the responsiveness of the students and the time allocated as I formulated ideas regarding personal implications.
