I was born and raised in another country, and then I moved to America looking for the American dream like many others. Having come from a different country, life in America is hard especially due to the fact that I live alone. I have to work to be able to take care of my financial needs. I have to work more than job in order to survive. And live a comfortable life.
I calculated my monthly expenses which came to a total of $1,440. This simply means I have to work two jobs in which I earn $ 2086. Best thing there are a variety of available jobs that one can do to survive in America.
My total expenses are $1,440 like I stated earlier, initially I calculated each and every expense separately then summed them up together. My first and my most crucial bill is my rent which comes to a total of $655, I have rented near downtown so that I can walk to work. My phone bill is not a stable figure but for instance this month I paid $56. I choose the prepaid phone system since it’s cheaper than post paid at the same time it keeps me displined as I limit the number of calls I can make. With the postpaid version I not only get carried away while speaking but I also get carried away with the number of people I want to call, then at the end of the day the bill is crazy.
My grocery bill per month is $300; I prefer shopping weekly for groceries it’s easier and more manageable. I don’t eat in restaurant or fast food places thus I am able to minimize on my bills. I also avoid going out with friends as it is a very expensive ordeal. Besides all my expenses my parents taught me to always keep money aside for emergency. Emergency money is meant to cushion an unexpected event. My current is enough to allow me to save $400 for emergency.
Amongst my jobs one is at West Banks. I was hired a month ago and my staring pay was nine dollars an hour. I work for a maximum of forty hours a week. I receive my pay cheque every week and that is very advantageous since I do not pay tax. Occasionally when there is a lot of work and I have time on my hands I work overtime, it pays better and helps cover some of my monthly expenses. This job pays better than most jobs people have since most pay as per by the market rate which is $7.25 per hour. These jobs have another disadvantage as they are not regular and they are harder. In my west banks job I get a one dollar raise per hour annually.
My second job is part time and I earn $8.07 per hour unlike my job at West Banks where I earn $1440 a month without tax and with tax I earn $(0) on every check. It is quite some good amount of money though it is not enough to cover all my expenses. Luckily for both my jobs I get a weekly cheque and they are all tax free. After paying all my bills and putting my emergency money aside the rest I use to buy things I need maybe clothes, electronics etc.
This kind of lifestyle is very hard and even harder when you have to undergo through it alone. I have to work two jobs or more for me to have a better life and also for me to survive. I struggle through each day so that I can financially sustain myself. The best thing I know is that am not the only one so many experience what am going through and some give up along the way. I thank God for the fact that I always have stable, easy and dependable jobs. Furthermore my managers understand my situation besides living very close to my work places. I can proudly say am living part of the American Dream
I can honestly to survive in America is an act of bravery. You have to be very brave, strong and persevering. Situations change very drastically like one looses a job within no time, thus you might lose anything you had. I put extra effort to get along well with my co-workers and managers. I have made it my duty to ensure that I satisfy my customers. I believe I will make it regardless of the circumstance.
