American literature and more specifically poetry is the subject which I had to put in more effort. I was never interested in poetry at all. I did not appreciate the essence and relevance of poetry at all. This is because I did not find American literature the least enjoyable subject during my study. This made me struggle through my classes. Nonetheless, at the end of the day, there was no option but studying. I had to endure numerous frustrated days and nights as a result of lack of enthusiasm. The worse periods were not only during examinations but also during class periods. I feared terribly whenever I was asked to read out a poem loudly and explain its` meaning to the whole class. I felt that everyone was in a position to explain poems apart from me. I thought that comprehending poems could only be done by deep thinkers.
My struggle in poetry continued through my studies until I changed my perception towards poetry through a group of friends whom we discuss with. I, together with my classmates formed a group discussion after realizing the need to discuss various subjects over and again to enhance comprehension. I began to appreciate the existence of poetry and the relevance of American literature at large. In addition, I realized the importance of reading numerous books on American literature and poetry quite often. This gave me a chance to comprehend and appreciate poetry. These realizations turned into an extreme enthusiasm for a subject I did not like at all. Nevertheless, I believe I still need to read more and discuss frequently in order to boost my comprehension power. The lesson I learnt from the difficulty I faced in poetry has been monumental towards my general achievement in education.
