Dramatic theory of communication
Dramatism is a complicated theory that has perspective that is interpretive in nature. The simple idea of this theory is that in life everything can be viewed from a drama point of view, which is thorough with actors, a setting, and a plot. It furthermore describes life in three lenses: dramatistic pentad, identification, and guild-redemption cycle.
Identification makes the audience get in touch with the one speaking and hence successful persuasion of the audience is made possible. Applying this to real life situation is when I was in college in my first year of college or freshman year. In that year I as I attended the class the lecturer was talking about Shakespeare. The whole Shakespeare topic was not of interest to me. The lecturer then went ahead and told us how he abhorred learning about Shakespeare when he was an undergrad, and specifically the play that at that class were looking into. The lecturer continued telling us that later someone else expounded to him in a different way about the story. Because of this he came to change his attitude about the Shakespeare plays and he later came to like and even enjoyed the plays to the extent of falling in love with them. After him telling us about the turn of events that made him like the Shakespeare plays, I aligned myself with how, and yes I really hated studying Shakespeare, but after explaining it for the second time a different light was definitely cast on the play. From then onwards I also liked the Shakespeare plays.
The dramatic pentad has a notion that sets things actually into five drama elements as follows: the scene, the act, the purpose, and the agent. This one particularly assists one to realize the speaker’s motivation or driving force. A real life situation is like when in one of my political classes our lecturer told us to view speeches in this particular dramatic pentad way. While we study them. Example is like when the former president of the United States of America, George Bush used to speak. Our lecturer was telling us to set up the speech in a way that we would determine: the person who was talking, what activity was going on, the place the activities were taking place, and the reason the activity was taking place. While we did these, it made it easier to comprehend why a specific thing occurred.
With guilt redemption cycle, it is aimed at getting rid of all the guilty sense that is the nature of human beings and especially when it comes to speaking in public. Guilt functions as a factor that motivates and drives drama in human beings. Guilt is purged in two ways. One is through scapegoating and the second is through mortification or the speaker confessing to the guilt and asks to be forgiven. A real life situation of this is when I attended therapy. I was told to talk to the other people and first I admitted that I was an alcoholic and would like to be forgiven by everybody that I hurt either directly or indirectly while I was drunk most of the times. This in a way made me feel free from what I was ashamed of doing and it opened me up to the audience who in real sense got captured by my confession and were able to listen and relate to what I was saying.
In conclusion, dramatization is an appropriate way of communication that serves both the audience and the speaker in terms of the message being conveyed and the audience’s ability to understand and get the message.
