Nineteenth century was an era of changes, creation and development for America. American society witnessed several changes in this century. These changes were results of different incidents that took place within and outside of the America. This paper intends to discuss American society, how people used to live and entertained along with discussing other related aspects.
America was in the process of making. New industries were established, a number of new cities emerged and people, from across the world, were flooded in these cities. New cities were established around Industries where people from remote areas migrated and worked. Infrastructure, Sanitation, and public health were addressed with a new perspective. Women along with men started working outside of their homes. American women became aware about their rights and instead of depending upon male members of their family, they became independent. African Americans were given their rights that they deserved and were demanding since a long time. Several social movements took place in the American society.
Americans used to entertain themselves with music, theatre and literature. Main Theme of nineteenth century’s American music was religion. Dartmouth Handel society was formed where People used to sing and hear religious music. Harvard college orchestra is believed to be the first orchestra in the America that entertained Americans for a long time. In this century, a number of bands were formed to entertain Americans. Theater also entertained Americans across the nation. Theater companies were formed and these companies used to travel across the America in order to entertain Americans and earn money from them. Apart from drama, play, music and literature, sports were also a mode of entertainment in the contemporary American society.
