Portion Distortion Quiz Analysis
When we think of portion in general we think of the amount of something. Such as the amount of food we eat or a fraction of that. Americans face a challenge considering we over eat and take in more than we usually should. Not because we want to but because we can and there is nothing and no one to stop us. Portions deals with a smaller fraction of what we usually eat, meaning eat less or eat smaller sizes of the same foods. That way we have control over the foods and substances we intake instead of the food having control over us. The Portion Distortion quiz was created to allow us to see what we eat versus what we should eat.
When dealing with the Portion Distortion quiz one of the first things noticed is the comparison of foods years ago compared with that of now. Based on the information given it asked “How many calories are in this bagel? 20 years ago- 140 calories, 3 inch diameter. Today 350 calories 6 inch diameter.” (NHLBI 2015, slide 2-3). That total gave a difference of 210 calories. One must consider the equation of calories coming into the body which must equal to calories going out of the body. In order to do this the extra 210 calories must be burnt off doing body or muscle movement routine or exercise such as walking, jogging or another form of it. The size and calories have doubled today in what it used to be two decades ago for food.
