Orientation/ Training for a new Employee in Health care
Orientation session:
Primarily in the 1950s, some institutions began implementing automated systems for accounting and book keeping in their records, but this was mainly restricted to the transactional processes and nothing more. With the start of the 1960s, some institutes began to include patient care applications in their systems. Near the mid of the 1960s some legislation in the US made it essential for some incorporation of information systems due to the nature of the work. Although many hindrances came in this integration process due to the lack of understanding of the health care system by the computer manufacturers, by the late 1960s most health care institutes started to use diagnosis and other patient care systems. In the late 1970s, most health care systems started contracting for the development of various systems designed specifically for health care. The first information system that fully integrated into every aspect of health care was in the 1979 in the gynecology department. By DR. Lawrence Weed at the university medical, center in Burlington, VT. Near the 1977, a system was under development, aimed at fully taking care of patient classification and nurse staffing processes. There was a shift in the way these systems developed; now aimed at looking after the quality of healthcare in the 1990s. With the start of the year, 1999 portable health care systems came into play, whereby PDAs allowed students and nurses to b in constant contact with instructor in the office .
Currently information systems are being prioritized towards, Practice management, Electronic (Health) Records, Decision support, infrastructure, meaningful use, Workforce development, coordination, share calculation, data quality/accuracy, administrative management tools, Security and regulatory compliance, communication and environmental health .
The most relevant to the health sector is the Electronic records systems. It has the most far reaching results and has the least amount of machine errors and the most simple function (recording) is used in several very complex functions (decision making, prediction and billing) also it is essential for the data analysis tools, which is the basic drive behind information system development. In addition, this record keeping has paved the way for home care system, which has resulted in a decrease in the number of hospital visits made by patients. . Though the entire system of healthcare revolutionized, it is also presenting many obstacles especially because there are various hindrances to proper implementation, including but not limited to financial and psychological obstacles. Psychological obstacles include the hesitation in using information systems and the lack of training, which means that quite a lot of investment is yet required to bring about proper implementation. .
