The leader is expected to possess certain values which define the characteristics of model of leadership. The leader provides the guidance to its subordinates, followers and society in general and demonstrates the path to success and righteousness. There are several values which have been identified as the predictor of leadership; the values which are considered to be the foundation of leadership model envisaged by me are integrity, professionalism, creativity, courage, inspiration, care and teamwork. Every value mentioned afore is significant in shaping a leader’s profile as a model for the society. Though, every value is equal in importance and has to be imbibed and exhibited by the leader, the values which I prefer most to demonstrate are the value of integrity, creativity, team work and courage. Every leader has some core values through which other values are acquired and exhibited, for instance, team work is the value which is the precursor of understanding the need of the followers or subordinates and to motivate them and remain flexible. Similarly, creativity is the precursor of other leadership values like flexibility and openness and permission to give opinions and share views.
I believe in integrity as the basic value which I as a leader would definitely demonstrate. Integrity ensures ethical behavior which is significant for the success of any institution and organization. Unethical practices, when exhibited by leader are adopted by the followers quickly and soon infect the whole culture. Leaders always strive to go beyond the obvious and achieve excellent results with keeping the teams motivate and stress-free at the same time.
Leaders motivate their people towards accomplishing a tack and convince them the tack is achievable, how difficult it may appear. They are able to generate the feeling of excitement for achieving that goad which leads to commitment and dedication to the task. Leaders are the individuals who exhibit the leadership qualities and hold their rank in the eyes of people, they are not necessarily the one occupying the leadership position but can be an individual who stand as the leader in a situation. Leadership starts with arousing the expectations and ambitions of the people and then, fine tuning them with appropriate leadership skills to achieve the goals. Though, any individual can be designated as a leader but to actually emerge as a leader and to be considered as a leader by the people requires a person to display behavioral aspects which convinces people on the qualities of leader.
Leader has to demonstrate certain behavioral qualities to gain the trust, faith and commanding position by the sub-ordinates. Leader should comprehend the significance of their position, the knowledge they possess and should ensure the effective implementation of their knowledge. Behavioral aspect which are required to be demonstrated by leader are the confidence in dealing with people and working towards to build the trust of people in their leader. Another significant behavioral aspect is the effective communication of the thoughts, views and ideas of the leader to his people to enable greater understanding in the correct sense which allows people to agree with the leader. Understanding the people and helping them whenever required is the trait which builds the confidence and trust of people in their leader and also enables the leader to convey the message that he cares about his people. Sharing and mitigating the information is another crucial behavioral aspect as it keeps people informed and confident of their leader.
The leadership style preferred by me is the servant leadership. This style motivates the leader to consider the need of the society before the personal benefit and the aim of the leader is to satisfy the need of the society. Command-based leadership style is disregarded by the leader following the servant leadership style and such leader believes in addressing the needs of the employees to meet the goals of the organization and ensures the development of skills of people to enable them to work properly. Poor leadership is prevalent in today’s society and arises from the self-interest of the leaders. In this situation, servant leadership is the solution and can change the leadership style from self-interest to benefit of society. I understand that I am bound to face certain challenges while adopting the servant leadership style; however I plan to face them with the courage and assertiveness which my leadership values provide me.
The servant leadership model provides great benefits to the society and the employees of the organization as it focuses on developing the employees to perform their task effectively along with catering to their requirements. The society and employees are the central theme of this leadership model and the leader work towards ensuring the interests of the employees which improves the performance of the employee thus benefitting the company in return. This model relates to the transformational leadership which involves the clarity of vision by the leader and communication of it to the employees. This style of leadership always gains employee trust and confidence as people believe that the leader is working towards their well-being.
I consider the servant leadership and transformational leadership as my model of leadership and would strive to work towards the benefits for the society and the people. This model relates well to the basic value of integrity, teamwork and courage identified by me.
