Before taking the plagiarism pre-test I read the academic integrity policy on the University website. I could not find it at the link provided, but I was able to find the 2015-2016 catalog through the University website. The policy is clearly written and explained that peers, not just faculty and administrators, could raise charges of plagiarism. It also indicated that students who engaged in plagiarism could be expelled from the University.
I received a score of 8 out of 10 on the pre-test, because I was not aware that common knowledge did not have to be cited. I thought that proverbs and information such as Washington’s birthday would always be cited because they may be information a reader did not know before reading a source. I have always erred on the side of caution when it comes to citing sources. The tutorial indicates that they are considered common knowledge because they can be found from a large number of sources. I also have never heard of Turabian style documentation, but the link provided in the tutorial did not work so I am still not sure how it is used. I was able to answer all questions correctly on the post-test.
There are a lot of reasons why a student might choose to plagiarize. A student may not have the time to complete an assignment or paper in time to meet a deadline. He or she may not fully understand the topic of the assignment, and need help to complete it. The most common reason for plagiarism is that a student does not really know he or she is plagiarizing. That is why it is important to understand that there are many kinds of plagiarism and sometimes just including your source does not properly credit it.
The adverse consequences of plagiarism depend on the person and instance of plagiarism. For some people, there will be fear and anxiety that they will be caught. Others may feel shame or dishonor. The consequences that are more significant are those that affect a student academically. According to the University academic integrity policy, a student may fail the assignment or the course. Consequences can range from having to rewrite a paper to expulsion.
