Any government claiming to be democratically elected and representing the people should stay as far away from issues morality as possible. This is because there are as many versions of morality as there are the number of people the government is representing. Every citizen has their own version of morality and to try to force a certain moral alignment on the people would be an infringement of their liberties. There are however certain moral conventions that cut across the line and are recognized by each citizen for example each citizen with a sane mind knows it is wrong to kill another citizen.
The government has every right to limit and pass legislation on matters pornography and drug abuse.it is true that these issues mostly affect consenting adults but each citizen is an asset of the government in terms of revenue and nation building. The government has the mandate to protect its citizens not only from external aggression but also from sources of danger which are homegrown even if the citizens themselves are the architects of this danger.it is also becoming apparent that the problems of drug abuse and pornography re not limited to consenting adults only.an increasing number of young people are engaging in this activity and thus it is the prerequisite of the government to protect them.
If Mills was to miraculously come back to life he would be utterly appalled by the status of controversy over pornography. Based on mill’s philosophical work it is clear that he would be of the opinion that the government should not interfere in matters pornography so as not to oppress its people. He would be strongly against Longino who is of the opinion that pornography as a form of expression is not protected by the first amendment. He would side with Narveson who is more liberal.
