Disciplining children can at times be very challenging to parents especially when their child’s behavior is obnoxious. Parents and teachers should be more assertive while disciplining children between the ages of three to ten. Most parents would differ with this statement but children are to be disciplined in order to be raised properly in the society. A parent’s responsibility is to properly direct his/her child in a lifestyle that will lead him/her to mature into a disciplined adult. Parents should find an effective way of disciplining their children positively, and this will inhibit good behaviors in them.
First, parents should commit themselves to teach their children boundaries. Parents should coach their children to practice admirable behaviors as a discipline strategy. In addition, spell out the punishments if the children misbehave. Parents should make their children know that, the punishment spelt out will be real if they misbehave. Parents should make a commitment to their child’s discipline and be consistent in their discipline strategy. Second, parents should be realistic in their expectations of their children. A parent should only ask their children to do what is possible and not impossible. If a parent asks a child to do the impossible, it will frustrate the child and the child might become rebellious. They should also be safe and swift on their children depending on their age bracket.
Next, a parent should use child-level logic by explaining to the child why he/she needs to behave in a certain manner. If children understand the do’s and don’ts and the kind of behaviors they need to avoid and why, they will be able to abide with the rules and be disciplined.
Give your child predictable consequences of misbehaving. The discipline should be positive so that it does not affect the child. A parent should let the child know that if he/she behaves in a certain manner, a certain result or punishment will proceed. It is vital for a child to understand that the same result will come from the same behavior, and so a child will have control of his/her life. Children will avoid doing certain mistakes because they are rest assured that they will get consequences B, for behaving in way A. They will abide with the rules to avoid being punished.
In addition, a parent should give positive reinforcements if a child exhibits good behavior and adheres to the rules set for him/her. Also, parents should give their child some freedom of choice during the day for behaving well and this is a loving form of discipline that is likely to decrease acting out and tantrums. The child will be more disciplined because he knows that, he will have some freedom to do his/her own things. If the child behaves in a manner that is not appropriate during that time, the parent should sit down with the child and know why the child behaved that way and counsel him/her why they should not behave in such a manner.
In conclusion, there are different types of useful non-aggressive methods that can be used by parents to discipline their children. Parents should not avoid disciplining their children because of aggressive discipline methods. Children should be taught to act appropriately in public and how to behave around others at a tender age. Disciplining a young child is not very easy; it takes time, energy and effort. However, effective and consistent discipline is the cornerstone to every child’s well being and becoming a disciplined and responsible adult in the future.
