Final Reflection
First, I had a compilation challenge in the creation of the final content from the drafts. After gathering and compiling my thoughts into writing, I lacked the determination to check if I had the right content and tone to help in information delivery. I revised both drafts to make sure that the writings were appropriate to my target audience. Also, I had a challenge trimming the words and content to the acceptable amount. To help in solving this problem, I acknowledged my primary goal as to inform rather than intimidate the audience. Therefore, I avoided the use of or defined any technical concepts used in the final paper.
My strategies for the successful completion of the memo included remaining precise about the memo, organizing research material, editing, and revising. I made sure to collect a significant amount of support information as points of reference during writing. The editing and revising strategies included going through the drafts in an attempt to improve the final material. Finally, clarity meant that I stuck to the assignment’s expectations. Over time, I found that I had improved my critical thinking skills concerning formal writing.
Summative Reflection
I had a score of three in the class writing. This performance served as the greatest improvement I have ever made towards my communication skills. I will use the knowledge learned as applicable to the practical world during and after school. Also, I also improved my ability to work as part of a team. The skill came from a coursework requirement for students to engage in group work. The collective nature of this practice assisted in improving my writing skills.
My biggest accomplishment was learning about the power of persuasion through academic writing. The persuasive memo was not only an academic turning point but also a chance to sharpen my persuasive skills. My biggest challenge involved finding the right amount of material that would aid in stating my arguments. The memo, again, served as a platform through which I would learn excellent writing and research skills.
I made impressive changes in my resume, cover letter, and elevator pitch writing skills. These skills are evidently reflective with successful assignment completions in the resume, cover letter, and elevator pitch assignments. One assignment that showed an improvement in persuasiveness is through the persuasive memo. In future, I know I have the power to pitch my business ideas successfully to the company. I will take away the power to persuade and communicate effectively during job interviews and career advancement.
Process Reflection on the Course
The assignments helped in understanding the importance of time management, teamwork, attention to order. These concepts play a vital role in establishing, maintaining, and building careers. Through teamwork, for instance, I know the skills to help in cooperating with colleagues in the workplace for successful task completion. Also, my ability to finish and submit assignments in time helped developed the need for time management.
Through this course, I have learned the importance of oral and literal communication in business context. I can now pitch ideas without fear of intimidation from management executives. I can also present ideas in writing in a logical, organized and grammatically correct manner. I learned this skill through the successful completion of the persuasive memo. Finally, I learned the power of effective communication during problem solution in a business environment. The skill expressed itself during the persuasive memo assignment when I had to pitch I idea of a cost effective CSR project to business executives.
Before to this course, I had always regarded diversity as a negative issue in the workplace. The reason for this assumption was that a diverse working environment acts as a breeding ground for disagreements and unnecessary accommodations. However, the coursework shows the need to appreciate diversity as a call for inclusiveness and completeness during teamwork. Particularly, I have come to value diversity as effective in organizational cultures that allow for active employee participation in decision-making.
