Five years ago, a soldier of the U.S. Army, Bowe Bergdahl, had disappeared from the rest of his troops while stationed in Afghanistan and subsequently held by Afghan captors. In late May, President Obama had announced that he would make a trade with the captors – send Bergdahl back and in return receive five Taliban terrorists who have been held in Guantanamo as prisoners of the U.S. for years. Obama had made sure to include an executive agreement that those five Taliban members must remain in Qatar, closely monitored by officials there.
While there was no congressional review prior to making this decision, Obama felt strongly that it was simply the right thing to do, following the belief that no soldier gets left behind. The House of Representatives was not given a chance to use a discharge petition to approve or reject Obama’s trade idea. The President used his executive privilege to make the decision solely, in order to move quickly to protect the soldier whom they felt was in extreme danger. The simple use of emergency powers allowed Obama to act quickly on the matter, using his Constitutional right to skip over the Legislative Branch because he felt that Bergdahl’s health was in critical danger, thus rendering an emergency and the absolute need to save a U.S. Army soldier who had been captured and tortured for the past five years.
As the President of the United States, Barack Obama is the unitary executive, and has control over the entire executive branch. This gives him both the power and the right to make these types of decisions without approval or review from members of Congress. While some may argue that holding this power and having the ability to use it at any time for any type of situation could potentially be dangerous or hazardous, Obama stands his ground that he indeed made the correct decision to trade Taliban members for one of our captured Army soldiers.
Until Bowe Bergdahl can be completely interviewed and debriefed, the government is holding him from seeing his family just yet. He is also undergoing psychological exams, mainly because he was exposed to some severely unkind and inhumane treatment while in the possession of his captors.
Some U.S. citizens feel so very strongly against Barack Obama’s decision to trade terrorists for one of our soldiers, who quite possibly betrayed and abandoned his station before being captured, that they would like to see President Obama impeached for his actions. There are many questions regarding why Obama would give back five very dangerous members of the Taliban, just to bring back one of our soldiers who had betrayed his fellow troops, abandoned his station, and potentially caused the death of those troop members as they went searching for their missing member. Questions are flying as to what Obama’s real motive was behind this confusing and uneven trade with the so-called “enemy.” It seems as though Obama may have just put the United States in grave danger by releasing five dangerous terrorists back into the world to be reunited with their fellow terrorist Taliban members.
