This book is comprehensive and very elaborate, especially with regard to the global trends on human rights. Looking at human religious perspective is an issue that has always spurred heated debate. For instance, globalization of human rights and democracy is an issue that is not accepted in all parts of the world because of the differences in religious ideologies.
In the Arab world and other parts of the world where Islam is widely accepted, it becomes rather difficult to apply some of these concepts. For instance, the Islamic religion does not provide for human rights to women and anything that states contrary to this is a violation of their religion and therefore does not have a place in their society. Similarly, democracy is always viewed as a western philosophy that should not be applied in every society.
In my opinion, my response would be that the assertions within the book, and more specifically in this chapter are true in the sense that globalization of human rights does not carry the face of all cultures and beliefs but rather inclines itself towards the western culture. This therefore implies that culture and religion are very imperative to the implementation of an issue that regards morality in a society.
It is also true that most women have been sidelined from the rest of the society by the systems of culture. For instance, the Muslim culture alienates women by denying them access to the fundamental human rights. However, before imposing anything on people, it is imperative to understand their cultural and religious background. This will provide an easier and appropriate approach to apply when tackling the issue.
