The basic purpose of the work was to understand the concept of whaling and its implication in the modern world. I had to examine and understand the concept of whaling. For this I had to do extensive research. I read a lot of material. I had to take a look at the historical background of whaling. It was amazing to know that human’s have been whaling for thousands of years. I had to examine what are benefits of whaling. I had to understand why people are interested in whaling. I tried to examine the reasons as to why the humans indulged themselves in an activity like whaling. I tried to find the answer of this simple question through this short research. Was it just greed or are there any other reasons of whaling? I had to analyze the economic aspect of whaling as well along with studying its roots in depth. On the other hand I had to examine the perceptions of people who were against the concept of whaling. I had to look at facts and figures regarding the claims of ant-whaling groups. After all this investigation and scrutiny, I had to propose a final solution. I had to give a way ahead, which I felt was for the betterment of all stakeholders involved. The work also required evaluating some economic considerations. I understood the working of the economics of the whaling industry. I had to understand how it influenced human life in general. I had to find out which organizations and people are working for protection of whales and how are they doing it. I had to understand and comprehend the purpose group involved.
The most important thing I learnt during this work was how to research. I had to read and search a lot of material to reach a logical conclusion. I had to examine pros and cons of every point I found. I was able to find a lot of material online and due to the facility of internet, access to this information was made quite easy. A lot of work has been done on this subject. I learnt that people really care about this extinction of whales. Besides, I understand how over the years people are becoming more ethical and moral in their acts and thus business avoid immoral practices or means. This includes whaling. Hence, it could be understood how strongly people feel about this. Furthermore, I was able to understand the perspective of the other side as well. Whaling for many is about culture, about tradition, about heritage. It is something people have been doing for centuries. They fail to understand that if centuries of whaling haven’t ended the whale breed, why such a thing would happen now, yet this is a prediction made by the oceanographic experts. For them, whaling is an ego boost. It is a feeling of triumph. Overcoming such a huge animal is no mean feat. Hence, this was one perspective of looking at it. These people were whaling for their own selves. However, there is another aspect to this phenomenon, the economic angle. Whaling creates a huge economic activity.
Thousands of lives are dependent on this profession since this is not a new subject. Many are employed in this profession. Furthermore, the body parts of whales are used for multiple purposes. Hence, to discontinue whaling all of a sudden would be simple impractical or rather impractical. There was another perspective. It stated that whaling should continue. However, it should only continue with strict and stringent guidelines. Those guidelines should be implemented with strength and power. So in all there were three perspectives. A group of people who consider, killing whales as immoral and unethical, The 2nd ones, who consider whaling a part of culture and tradition, therefore say that whaling should be killed for personal use, rather than economic benefits. Lastly, people who wanted the whaling industry to continue. However, they felt that it should continue under certain and specific regulations enforced by the government.
Initially I found it difficult to search relevant data on whaling. However, after sometime I was really able to find a lot of data. I had to do a lot reading to pick up the most important stuff and leave out other material. The solution was in reading everything thoroughly and understanding the underlying concepts behind the words. When giving a final proposal, I was a bit skeptical. The humanitarian approach made me think that whaling should stop. However, I knew this was practically not possible since behind this activity there lies a whole network and an industry is ruining. So I was confused at the back of my mind and was unable to decide the best way ahead. However, with statistics showing that whaling as an industry is already on slow but steady decline, I was sure that whaling would be cut to size some day. Hence, I figured that a middle of the path solution would be best. This again was only done after due consideration of facts and figures. A little problem I was faced was that I emotionally liked the idea of whaling to end. However, the economics of it, logically told me that it was impossible. So it was a paradox for me as well.
My research skills have considered increased after this work. In the future I shall be able to do better research for any other work. Besides I will also be able to identify which material is important and which is irrelevant. When doing any work based on research, it is really imperative and vital to be able to recognize the importance of any point. After this work, I shall be able to read 10 paragraphs and I would be able to pick out the lines which are really important for my subject. This will really help me in the future. Furthermore, I will be able to compare emotional value and economic value of things. It is always important not to give too much weight to either. For future work, I can use many examples from this work. For example, it mentions that people consider unethical business practices as unacceptable. Hence, for any further work or research, I can state down that people are careful about who they do business with. Lastly in future, this work’s experience will help me in organizing and planning my work better. This work has helped me understand my own strengths and weakness. Hence, I will be able to perk up my weaknesses and try to sustain my strong points.
