Introduction
Crime and terrorism prevention have become chief issues in the contemporary society. In safety and security, a security officer is very crucial. Consumers are turning to private security firms to protect businesses and neighborhoods. However, these firms may not always use the relevant techniques and methods therefore compromising the security in many business environments. The role of a chief security officer is not merely sitting in the office and managing by walking around ordering (Gompert, 69). To augment security, security officers should be provided with a list of instructions and code of conduct that they must adhere to in the work place. Security officers must follow the following in regard to arrest, seizure and searching of suspects:
- All security officers need to stay proactive within the strictures of what is lawful in regard to private person’s arrest. This is to ensure that they do not disregard the law of the land as this might create a conflict of interests.
- During and after an incident, a security officer must be able to observe the proceedings and intervene or report in cases where they might not be able to be of assistance to the victims or criminals. This will reduce the recording of distorted or biased information which might adversely affect the performance of the security team.
- Any resident that comes into the residential area shall not be allowed in if they carry loaded or unloaded firearms, whether or not it is serviceable or operative unless such people produce a valid firearms qualification card that must be meticulously scrutinized by the security officer to ascertain its validity and what it encompasses.
- Any person that attempts, either knowingly or unknowingly, to evade security searches must be handled with high level of care and subjected to a thorough scrutiny to ascertain their motives for doing so and the results must immediately be reported to the security office for the relevant measures to be taken.
- Any person found carrying any replica or other simulated firearm and not in a position to adequately defend their actions through relevant means should immediately be presented to court by the security officer who found them or interrogated them.
- During arrest, the officers must exercise the highest level of professional ethics. No officer shall be allowed to subject any suspect whatsoever to any kind of undue harassment. If suspected criminals are rude and portray the least level of cooperation, they should be handcuffed immediately and forwarded to the security office and in extreme cases, the suspect should and must be placed under a very strict surveillance (Peel, 199).
- No security officer shall be allowed to violate the human rights of the suspects as clearly stipulated by the universal declaration of human rights manuscript (Graham, 152). More specifically, officers should handle victims of the opposite sex with a high degree of care and respect, and avoid any form of sexual aggravation.
- Security officers must regularly patrol the areas of their jurisdiction and liaise with the residents so as to obtain any information regarding security threats within the complex.
- Any suspected criminal must be seized only with the awareness and consent of their relatives and with clearly documented reasons which must be agreed upon by the entire security team.
- Suspects must be seized in enclosures that are up-to-date and meet the current standards of human life.
If the above are observed and adhered to, the issue of insecurity will be reduced to very minute levels or possibly zero.
