When I first started reading the book "Some we love, some we hate, some we eat", I found this book very interesting. The book starts with an introduction about the definition of "meat". Nowadays, people commonly think that fish is also a kind of meat. However, the introduction includes a story from a PhD of anthropology – Judith – who considered herself a vegetarian, while she was used to eat fish. In my opinion, fish is a kind of meat, since fish are animals that are able to show different repetitive or learnt behaviors and interact with other living beings. This conclusion was drawn from my own experience, as when I feed my fish for a period of time, they will gradually gain the habit of gathering together every time I get close to the tank.
I would like to get back to the book, beginning with the chapter that is connected to the dolphins' therapies (P.19). I had never heard about anything similar before, and if what is written in this chapter is true, it could be a great treatment option for a lot of people. However, I do not think that this treatment has any real medical effects. Nevertheless, even if no medical effects can be taken into account, there may still be an important "placebo effect", because people may get well psychologically, as they believe the dolphin therapy is working. This belief may help them recover from their sickness.
Another topic that is worth mentioning concerns the "moral dumbfounding" concept (p.53), which is rather impressive. If I were in a situation that my pet died and someone asked me if I would eat it or not, I am sure I would refuse to do so. However, I cannot explain why I would be unable to eat it, even though it was dead. This is a dilemma between morality and reality, which made me think a lot.
Hi Kendrew, I agree with you that this book started with a lot of complexity, around the topic of fish. I am able to conclude that you mentioned “Judith, considering herself a vegetarian, while she is still eating fishes” to make sure that we realized that there is a connection between the story and reality. In addition, you also concluded that being a vegetarian means not eating any type of meat at all, either from fish or any other mammals’. On the other hand, my own emotional response after reading your response is that I am thrilled and would like to hear more about your opinions concerning the subject.
I liked the way you explained the quote, using details and examples. Moreover, you organized the story combining it with your own experience, which makes your response more attractive and coherent. As for me, if I were in Judith’s position, I would feel guilty, because knowing I was a vegetarian, I would not be supposed to eat any kind of animals’ meat. Also, just like you, and as a student, I would defend that being a vegetarian means we are not allowed to eat any meat from any animal. In what concerns other people who are not vegetarian, they should show some respect and avoid eating animals’ meat in front of vegetarian people.
Those were some of the ideas that came into my mind after reading this response. Eventually, the conclusion to be taken is that people should know what are the demands and the consequences of being a vegetarian. They should have some based knowledge concerning the foods that they may consume, as vegetarians, even before they start being vegetarians. In conclusion, I liked the way you wrote this response and it gave me a great help understanding this book in a much deeper way.
