Speak is a novel is about a girl named Melinda. Melinda an extremely timid and shy throughout the story but then again that is only for the reason that she had gotten raped during a party that took place over the summer. She then called the police because of what had taken place. However, for calling the cops everyone hated her and would not talk to her, not even her best friends would speak. A central part or theme of the story has a lot to do with mirrors. Whenever Melinda looks in a mirror it reminds herself about that part of her life that she wants to forget. The rape is what really troubles Melinda as she starts to struggles with wanting to be able to suppress the memory of the incident. The imageries of Melinda that she sees advance throughout the story alongside with Melinda’s brashness. With that said, this paper will discuss why the title 'Speak' is appropriate for this novel.
One of the reasons why the title 'Speak' is appropriate for this novel is because Melinda is not actually able to verbalize what has happened to her. She will not utter the suffering she went through with the rape. The fact that she will not verbalize anything to anyone, causes her to stop speaking all together articulating her voice by means of the art, she then starts creating for Mr. Freeman's class. Since she was not able to verbalize with her mouth, she did it in her art work. Melinda form of artwork turned out to be her verbalization. This form of verbalization and expression gradually aids Melinda in acknowledging that she was raped, come face to face with her attacker, and reconstruct her individuality. Because she was not able to have the verbalization to help express her emotions, she was able to put all of her willpower and passion into the arts in order to convey her build up emotions. The verbalization was key in the novel because it did not take the form have actually saying word but actually took the form of silence.
Another reasons why the title 'Speak' is appropriate for this novel is because it talks about how her silence was a picture that was worth a thousand words. As Melinda's depression started to get even worse, she started to act out and do things such as skip school. Then if that was not enough, she withdrew from other authority figures and her parents, who look at her silence as a way of getting some kind of "attention". Melinda hangs onto her silence as a way of fighting back because at least that way, she was not letting anyone get inside her world. The silence was a way of protecting herself against everyone. It was like her security blanket. However, Melinda gradually makes friends with her lab partner, David Petrakis, who heartens her to speak up for herself who would mean that she would have to break the silence. The silence was really significant because it was a way for her to gain strength from her tragedy. As long as she did not say a word, then it felt as though she had the upper hand. The silence was significant to the novel title was it was the exact opposite. In other words, it appears as though her silence had a way of speaking in s strange way because it was able to get people’s attention. In fact, it appeared as though he silence was more effective had she actually spoke and told what had happened to her. Melinda’s silence was a significant tool in the story because it was a comfort zone. This silence after a while turned into a disguise for her. As Melinda starts going on about her school days, her disguise which was used to make her stay in her own world alone, soon started to break apart as she began to get closer, to "Speak".
The last reason why the title 'Speak' is appropriate for this novel is because it shows how Melinda evolved from a broken girl to one that became together. Melinda Sordino slowly changed from a broken device to a symphony. In addition, she was able to treat her emotional injuries by speaking and then allowing the truth to come out. Moreover, Melinda has changed to a better person for the reason that now her experiences in life are plentiful. Melinda now appreciates the lives of diverse individuals because she experienced both loneliness and popularity. This young girl was in fear before when she though that everyone was her enemy, nevertheless once she started opening her story, she revealed she was loved. Melinda did not feel good about herself and hated joy after she was raped nonetheless she had the bravery to do what she felt was the right thing. What's more Melinda was like an injured horse and a bunny rabbit for the reason that she was victim to killers around her. Furthermore in spite of her conditions she still was able to give hope to life and end the end because of it, Melinda was able to avail.
In conclusion, it is obvious that the reasons why the title 'Speak' is appropriate for this novel are many. The title 'Speak' is appropriate for this novel because it displays how verbalization, silence and evolution have changed a broken young shy girl into some one that was strong and outspoken. It is a coming of age story that displayed a person that was mistreated by individuals in her life. Melinda discovered ease in art class where she progressed into a lovely tree that spoke. The intriguing thing about the novel was that it built its way up to the moment when Melinda finally broke her silence. The title is very appropriate because 'Speak' is something that she finally did in the end.
