The key to success of graduating with honor is having a supportive environment. Most students tend to have the passion for giving school their best. However, it is rare for an individual to complete their degree plan with excellent performance. In almost every school, from the lowest degree level to the highest one, a large area of precious space is occupied for a learning area that is called the library. However, students still struggle to pick the best environment for studying either at home or at their school’s library.
A school library has many tools that provide to assist the learning mechanisms, while studying in the home would consume more time to achieve the same objective. Sources are all over the library which comes in many different forms, such as books and publications in the two forms of paper and electronic, and tutors with expertise in different subjects. One would argue that these tools are also found at home with today’s technology and communication. That is true for some cases, but it would consume time and funds to receive these high-quality services. In the library, these services are included in the paid tuition fee.
The distraction is limited in the library environment, but it is different in a student home as uncertain factors play a large role. At home, a distraction from technology, for example, plays a huge role in discouraging a student from studying effectively. According to research, “80% of students reported that they switch between studying and technology somewhat often to very often. Rosen calls this “Continuous Partial Attention”” (Howard). While this is negatively affecting their retention capabilities, it also prevents them from studying continuously for an effective period altogether. Another common factor for distraction is the presence of family members who are not studying. Even if a student tries to focus on his/her homework, the little brother who is watching, his favorite cartoons will be a source of distraction.
Study groups are formed all over the library to enhance the learning experience that cannot be found at home. Undoubtedly, study groups contribute to more effective studying. If study groups are used appropriately, they can help a student to improve his/her lesson notes and can help cover a broader range of material (“Using Study Groups”). For example, the members of the study group can divide material amongst themselves and give summaries to each other for the assigned material. In this way, they can gain knowledge from a wider base. Moreover, study groups offer students a chance to look forward to studying. This is because a sense of competition is triggered. Every member tries to complete his/her assigned task in time in order to enlighten every member with the material.
The library seems to be an ideal environment for studying. The fact that a library’s purpose is to provide a milieu that is conducive to study is enough to convince a student to make effective use of this facility. Media through movies has also helped further this image in our minds. The library is usually the place where the student who tops the class is found.
Therefore, it is safe to conclude that the library is a more effective place to study as compared to home. It offers fewer distractions, is equipped with all necessary resources and encourages group study.
