During WWII, Nazi Germany invaded and occupied a lot of countries (Frank 12). Hitler was the leader of Nazi Germany who carried out the persecution of various groups of people including the Jews. The Frank family lived in Holland throughout this turbulent period. As Jews, the Frank family faced certain death or imprisonment, which drove them into hiding.
The main characters within The Diary of Anne Frank are Anne, her mother Edith, her father Otto, her sister Margot, the Van Daan family, Dussel the dentist, and Miep and all the helpers. They endured hard times for two years in hiding, this denotes courage. Otto discussed the likelihood of hiding within his work place to his business friends. He believed that hiding from the Gestapo would help the family to survive the war. This reflects Otto’s strong love for his family. He did the best he could to save Edith, girls and friends in the times of war. Otto transmitted courage to the family which helped them live happily in despair.
Instead of risking imminent deportation, imprisonment, and/or death, Otto and his family decided to hide above his business (Frank 20). Otto wrote a note suggesting that they were headed to Switzerland, and leaving the apartment disarrayed. This was purposefully done to mislead the Gestapo.
The plan of Otto almost worked. For a period of two years, everybody within the secret Annex became silent from morning to evening and lived darkness life. In spite of strict rules within the Annex, a colleague was doubtful and contemplated that the aide or protector knew something (Frank 10). To date, the betrayer of the eight is unknown, but on 4th August, 1944, the Frank family was sent to concentration camps. Nine months later, in March 1945, Anne died of typhus. Needless to say, her bravery and ideals live, as she is always mentioned as a model. It is heroic for Anne to keep a diary concerning everyday challenges and horrors of war.
Miep Gies, showed courage and heroism by risking her life in hiding the Frank family. Even though Miep Gies could be punished for assisting to hide Frank family, she offered her support.
