Although the tourist industry encourages the local population to cheat creating the ‘staged authenticity’ to attract as many tourists as possible and allows the visitors establishing their own rules for money it is still possible to turn the tourism into the constantly developing and profitable sphere with the unspoiled nature and respectableness towards both hosts and guests.
Nowadays, more and more people have an opportunity to travel to broaden their mind and gain more experience from the daily routines and lifestyle of other people from different parts of the world. The awareness of the concepts of tourist sphere such as the host-guest encounters, cultural and heritage aspects of tourist’s behavior as well as the staged and national authenticity allows developing the tourist business more efficient and handle all possible problems that could be arising during the tourist staying in the chosen country.
The first tourist concept I would like to consider is the encounter of the various cultures. The point is that the tourist zones are the places where the representatives of different cultures meet each other. Both aborigines and tourists are their own culture bearers. As a result of such a meeting people become aware of the unknown before traditions, customs, aspects of behavior and lifestyle. At the same time, the lack of cultural and communicative awareness can cause both natives and visitors feel the discomfort and can even emerge the conflict situations. To prevent the potential disagreements while visiting an unknown place the tourists should respect the views and laws of local residents.
The tourism itself became the part of the contemporary world. It can speed up the cultural exchange, enlarge the demand for the service in the tourist sphere, make national goods, clothes, music and other stuff fashionable and popular. In particular, when Kazakhstani tourists started visiting European cities they began renovating and redecorating their apartments to make them look more like European than Asian. Moreover, the native population of Kazakhstan became fond of pizza and burgers whereas people from English-speaking countries fell in love with ‘kumys’ – a traditional sour milk drink and ‘kurt’- pieces of dried curd.
However, we must acknowledge that too many tourists can influence badly on the morale and behavior of the visitors themselves as well as the local population. It often leads to the prostitution, mendicancy, using drugs and drinking alcohol, for instance. The local population of the countries where the tourism is the only one way of making a living is ready to do all to earn money and, unfortunately, not always honest, cheating and bilking customers. If you go to Cambodia you will face with the situation to be made paying much more money for the same product as the local people do not come so big income as the tourists visiting the country yearly due to its cheap and comfortable life. Another good example of the country where all local population is aimed for the serving of the tourists coming is Nepal. The local people live for only one dollar a day and any visitor is their potential sponsor. Staying in Nepal, please, be ready to pay $10 for one cup of tea in the local tea shop even if the local citizen has just paid $5 for the same cup of tea. Moreover, what costs cents in Cambodia cost $1 for the visitors, so, if you do not want to pay more, think of exchanging dollars to have enough money in the local currency.
The tourists respond exploiting the local workers, paying them a little money or even not paying at all. Such illegal actions are regulated by the local and the international legislation in the majority of cases, but the knowledge of local laws and cobwebs is essential if people are eager to travel.
Places where the hosts and the travelers respect each other can become really attractive tourist spots and increase the positive and productive collaboration between the locals and the guests. For example, many English instructors from English-speaking countries have been working in Kazakstan for many years, making friends and creating families because the people are very hospitable and the life is much cheaper, whereas the salary is even bigger and work conditions are more comfortable: smaller number of students in one classroom and friendly tax policy towards the foreigners. Furthermore, there are lots of places where people can improve their health for not so big money. Borovoe, Karkaralinsk, Bayan-Sulu have come to mind to prove this point of view. Those places have magnificent landscapes, incredible views, clean and healthy air and welcome service that make the places quite competitive in terms of the tourist resorts to enjoy the wild nature as well as to get over after any sicknesses.
In addition, the population of Kazakhstan in its majority can speak English that makes the foreigners not feel lonely and solitary. There are too many English schools and courses that the foreigners have already stopped being shocked when the sales assistances in the supermarkets begin to speak English to practice their skills as soon as they understand that the English speaking people are in front of them.
So the issues of tourists’ behavior in another cultural environment, ability to perceive the customs and traditions of the location can be considered as the way of making the tourism more popular and developed.
We also need to mention the staged authenticity that is related to the development of the tourism as well as to its self-destruction. The tourist flows from different countries grow rapidly. Asian people go to Europe and the USA to get familiar with the unusual and strange elements of western culture. At the same time, the tourists from West try to attend eastern territories to see the theme parks and magnificent temples. The sphere of global tourism is intertwined with the advertisement of ‘global’ places in mass media sources such as the Eiffel Tower, Brasilian festival, the Greek fur-coat tours, sex-tourism and so on. The studies on the tourist preferences in terms of taking pictures and choosing the place of destination help to understand the market demand and find an appropriate niche to make a fortune. The local population provides a lot of festivals and events for the tourists to attract people to visit their lands and invest in the economic development. What is an authenticity for the tourists there is just a usual place without any special features for the aborigines. However, the created legends and myths upon the creation of one or another place provoke the mass attendance of visitors. For example, in Karkaralinsk, Kazakhstan there is an unusual lake surrounded by the mountains. It is called the Lake of the Devil. Every year lots of visitors from different parts of the world come to this place to take pictures, sit near the water and listen to the scary story about the unhappy love of a rich girl and a poor boy whose parents were against their children’s love. The beloved decided to stay together forever and jumped into the water from the pick of one of the mountains. There is not any evidence that those people really lived and such a situation took a place, but people do not need the proof. Every season they come to the lake where sitting at night listen to this touching story. There are also many mountains shaped as animals such as a lamb, a bear, and a fox so it is easy to imagine what was done with the so-called legends about the national origin of those natural massive.
Stereotypes also help to build the staged authenticity. Kazakh people are believed to live in yurts – special nomadic tents. The local population organizes the territories with such tents and imitate the life of their ancestors to engage the tourists and increase their interest. The visitors take photos in the yurts, to place them later into the Instagram or Facebook.
National clothes is an essential attribute of the staged authenticity. All people from different places are familiar with the tendencies in fashion and style. Nevertheless, as long as the tourists believe that the natives wear the dresses of their ancestors the locals will maintain such opinion.
All these undertaken actions which purpose is an attraction of a big number of people can lead not only to the development but to the self-destruction of the tourism. It happens because the holding of mass tourist events can cause the negative changes of the territories served as the tourist spots. These territories follow the four stages of their mastering. At the first stage, a new tourist zone is visited by a moderate group of people that does not impinge on the ecological situation, but provides the financial growth of the local territories and make entrepreneurs enlarge the number of the tourist services, sightseeing, and local history activities. The second stage is connected to the reduction of the price of staying that causes the significant growth of the number of people with the average income. The number of coming people grows dramatically and the place starts to attract more newcomers from different corners of the world. The third period is the mastering that referred to the mass and uncontrolled growth of tourist flows that lead to the environmental degradation and infrastructure bottleneck. And, finally, due to the worse ecological conditions and resource degradation the number of tourists become smaller. It causes the decline in living standards and, as a result, the decay of the tourist activities. Thus, uncontrolled tourist development intensifies its effect on the local territories and bring to the self-destruction of the tourism itself.
