When George Washington’s term in office was nearing to end through a preceding retirement, he wrote a farewell address to show people that he had no intention to for running as a presidency candidate in the next term. He acknowledged and expressed the accumulated wisdom of an eventful and long life besides the benefits of the American government out of the new constitution. He also gave a warning on the parties and foreign entanglement, cautioned about the powerful establishment of the military and recommended on maintaining an appropriate public credit and the avoidance of too much accumulation of debts. Washington recommended that there should be a good faith towards nations by ensuring justice prevails. He said that there is need for harmony among all people, peace and good morality upheld by a good conduct (Grafton 23).
He said that people should be guided by justice, enlightened by freedom throughout all nations as ways of enhancing a long lasting relationship within mankind. If all these are observed, a best relationship could be enhanced and permanent inevitable antipathies in opposition disregarded against nations thus excluding any move downplay developments. When all these are followed with lots of justice then amicable feelings will be cultivated with nations discarding hatred and fondness towards slavery. He said that any country with ill will sentiments may cause a compelling war towards the government which is against the valuable calculations of good policy. Therefore, lack of U.S security could give a major threat to the State’s security in protecting both the citizens and the available resources. Pathways towards foreign nation’s influences in innumerable means and such attachments are more alarming to those exposed and autonomous patriot for there no opportunities they afford if they tamper with domestic divisions to practice any arts of seduction but to delude public opinion, persuade the public councils. Such connection of a miniature toward a famous and authoritative nation ruins the previous to become a satellite towards the latter (Hargrove, Julia & Smith 65).
Washington’s farewell has major historical significances on the economic development of the country, the relationship with other countries and the international recognition of his leadership. His recommendations on a greater security, appeal for unions among countries and exemption of wars amongst contributes to greater ties to countries that are not of same governances. The farewell was more significant in ensuring a democratic government that could ensure high moral values of governances through enhanced international relationship.
