Short, stout and soft spoken Mary Fisher, at 21 is a kindergarten teacher. But that is the furthest one can go when it comes to unraveling the mystery behind her simple physical appearance. It is said that appearances can lie and for this young woman, she indeed makes heads turn in our neighborhood when one sees the faces and warmth that he children exhibit when they see her near them. Even the parents know far too well that she is an angel, at least when it comes to attending to their young ones. Those familiar with her speak volumes about her warm heart. Even though many people may not realize the important role that she plays in the lives of very many children, she is one lady who is very passionate about her job. It is no wonder that children love her so much; she is very charismatic and charming too
She is a well built, petite, and light skinned young woman with long black hair. She has high cheekbones and a very warm smile that speaks to ones heart. She amuses me because every other time she opens her mouth to speak, a smile goes beforehand. She literary uses her smile all too well that one may just sit to listen to her endlessly without taking note of time. Her voice is husky and a bit pitchy and this I could tell from the very first word that came from her. At least her personality best fits her work and maybe this is what it makes it so easy for her to interact and communicate well with the children. She is loved by all those that come into her life and indeed, she is an epitome of those people who find out their purpose in life and put all their energies into getting the best out of themselves.
We sat outside her class, I was facing her and there I went with my well thought, structure and punctuated questions. Amazingly, she responded so well and thoughtfully. She happens to be a very well directed and resourceful person. Every single problem or case that comes her way has a solution to it. As we were still seated there, drones of children kept interrupting our interview, they called for her attention and each one of them went back satisfied. “Children’s issues need to be attended to every time they come up. “She quips, “Lest you make a child feel ignored if you don’t respond to them promptly. In as much as they kept coming back, I felt that she needed to attend to her pupils and therefore gave her room to do so, a gesture she welcomed warmly. Her heart goes out to them, more especially the youngest of the class who are very vulnerable and who have not yet understood the reason why they are brought to school every day.
She is very enthusiastic about her job because she goes about her teaching profession with a very genuine interest in fostering the cognitive and social growth of the learners. She tells me that there is no much grading the learners according to how they perform at leas not now because they have not known that they are supposed to compete. She takes count of how the learners fit in to the learning environment and when the transition from home is done in a short time and the learners get used to school, then she will know that the social skills of the learner have been achieved. When looking at the cognitive milestones, she gauges how the student responds to the tasks given to them in the classroom and it is positive then she will have known that she has achieved in transitioning the child into another environment away from home.
She is good at creating a good environment for learning new things. Her passion for literacy and motivation are put at play through this. She is a highly effective practitioner. She creates a fun filled yet a little challenging environment for learning. This is evident through the class reports she gives me. The report has information about the activities they have done at school and the feedbacks that the parents give when they have assessed what their children do at school. Her records are also very clean and impeccable. She is committed to detail, she tells me. That helps her know the abilities of the learners so as to attend to them at their individual levels while addressing their specific needs.
Her colleagues speak very highly of her. They have confidence in her and believe that she does her job very well. I got hold of some excerpts from her letters of recommendation and was thrilled at the comments that I saw. One of the recommendations say, “Her enthusiasm for teaching and lover for the children she teaches, ability to creatively plan her lessons effectively are her strong points that I have seen with no one else.” This comes from one of her employers where she worked before moving to her present work location. Another one said, “our children have become very self directed and competent too. It is thanks to you that they have established behaviors that are acceptable in our school and the wider society. Kudos for you have established a structured environment for student success.” It is no doubt that such recommendations from previous employers speak volumes about Fisher.
We wound up the interview with one of those very memorable moments that I would wish to remember for a very long time. One of her pupils had just rushed out to seek clarification about a painting she was working on. Just then she asked him to recite their class anthem, what I got from that young boy was a recitation that I was so much thrilled about. His politeness came to play when he told me, “Please don’t go with Miss Fisher, I want her to teach my mother how to pray.” Off the little boy went back to class and this left me thinking hard, “so this is not about painting and drawing and singing, she teaches them how to pray too, and address their seniors politely too?” I must say that I was very impressed. And indeed, she helps not only in the cognitive development of her pupils but also behavioral development. As we exchanged our goodbyes, I couldn’t stop but notice her gentleness and kind nurturing attributes. Indeed she accepts and welcomes everybody warmly into her heart. She appreciates the needs of the learners and other people in her life because she shows this through her positive interaction with everyone around her more especially the children.
