The Year My Parents Went on Vacation is a film of Brazilian origin. It was released on March 3, 2007 in Brazil. The story in the film dates back to the year 1970, and is about a young boy who was taken to stay with his grandparents as his parents were escaping the political instability during the Brazilian regime. Mauro (Michel Joelsas) was not facing the same situation as the rest of the citizens at that time. As everyone else was waiting for the national team’s competition in the world cup, Mauro was waiting for his parent’s return. This paper analyzes the film in relation to the sociopolitical context of the period.
According to Soulbrasileiro, on 1 April 1964, the military took over power and began the dictatorship regime that lasted to around 1985. The story in the film The Year My Parents Went on Vacation fell in the period when the military took over the government. It is related to the situations that affected the citizens at that particular time. After taking over the government, the army implemented an act to persecute anybody who was found to be a threat to the regime. It was the beginning of the dictatorship regime that lasted for about 20years. Mauro, a young boy of 12 years, found himself as a victim of the regime when his parents were forced by circumstances to go underground to avoid being prosecuted since they were left-wing militants.
Castelo Branco was the first military president, and he ruled to around 1967. He implemented an institution act that abolished all the political parties. The only parties that were to operate within Brazil at that time were the Movimento Democrático Brasileiro (MDB) and the Aliança Renovadora Nacional (Arena). The situation shows how the dictatorship regime affected the political arena during that period.
The social impacts of the dictatorship regime varied from since some people were affected directly while others were affected indirectly. However, for the young boy he was affected directly because he was eagerly waiting for the return of his parents while the rest of the people were waiting for the world cup competition. Some modernist thinkers, as well as socialists, felt that for Brazil to achieve some sense of world recognition, they were to that in the display of football in 1970. According to Alex Bellos, football was an efficient way to bring the people of Brazil together since it was an art (IBWM para 8). The social impacts of the dictatorship regime ranged from political to social with the religious groups also affected. For example, in the film the young boy is forced to exile in his country and finds solace in another family from different religious groups in the neighborhood (Piepszyk and Haiut para 1).
