Honesty is considered to be one of the most important virtues of the individual. It is generally accepted that lying is wrong and that lie makes you a bad person. On the other hand, anybody would admit that he or she lied at least once in the life. The complexity of relationship in our society presupposes that lie is actually acceptable when there is an important reason for that.
The first condition which makes lie acceptable is the protection of his or her own life. When there is someone suspicious knocks at the door, it is better to say that you are not alone in order to save your life. The danger of the possible death of serious harm justifies the lie because the loss of life is considered to be a bigger evil than a lie and harm it can cause.
Another condition which allows a person to lie is to tell untruth to save or protect the lives of others. Thousands of people hid Jews in their basements during the World War II, and this deed, no matter how hard it was, saved dozens of lives. The value of life is priceless and it exceeds the possible estimated value of lie.
Finally, lie is acceptable when it helps to improve someone’s life or make somebody feel better. For example, a doctor may lie to the patients when he or she believes that his or actions could be a part of the treatment and would help to heal a person. The so called “white lies” which boosts the confidence of a person important to you is also justified as it makes someone feel happier.
When lying, it is always important to evaluate what would be more harmful for you, for the society and for your significant others and people you love. When truth is more threating it is better to lie.
