Adventure water sports are very common activities among the young population in the world today. There has been an increase in the number of people engaging in the activities and thus increasing the demand for the sporting gear and equipment. Many people are not able to purchase these equipment because they cost quit a fortune and also they are only used when people are on holiday. This makes renting the equipment the next best option as it is cheaper because one pays for them only when they need them. This has therefore, become a booming business and many people are investing in it as others take it as their choice career path. This paper looks at the job description of a watercraft rental franchise owner.
A watercraft franchise owner is charged with providing watercrafts and equipment to the people who intend to engage in watersports. He operates under the umbrella of a bigger and stronger company which is the major supplier of the equipment. The franchisee pays a fee to the supplier and benefits from the already established corporate brand. This is important in watercraft rental business where safety is a major concern and people would opt to rent from suppliers with a known track record (McDavid & McDavid, 2009). On the other hand the supplier benefits in terms of developing and establishing business in new locations without necessarily investing and having the liability of the supply chain.
The main functions and duties of a watercraft franchisee are to ensure that they have the required equipment and that they are all in good working condition. This is achieved through liaising with staff in all levels. He should interact and maintain a healthy relationship with his clients to ensure repeat business. Through his management staff he should ensure that all maritime authorities’ regulations are followed to the letter. A watercraft rental franchisee should also ensure that all financial records are kept and budgets followed. He is also responsible for marketing the business to new clients as they maintain a good relationship with the existing customers.
Apart from having a variety and adequate equipment and water sports gear, a watercraft franchisee should have basic knowledge and training in the field in terms of safety and security which is a major concern in the line of business. A watercraft franchise owner should also have strong interpersonal skills and good public relations in order to be able to market the business and meet the clients’ expectations. Disputes may often arise and he should have the knowledge on how to deal with these challenges when they arise (McDavid & McDavid, 2009). This includes conflicts between employees, customer- employee or customer- customer conflicts. A background in management with a basic knowledge or experience in human resource, marketing and strategic management ensures that the person has an added advantage over others.
Disclaimers and approval; this business involves a lot of risky activities and therefore safety and security is a major concern. Although the clients are aware of the risk they expose themselves to, some result to suing the rental company for injuries they get during their adventures. In order to prevent such occurrences there are a number of terms and conditions involved. Clients should sign compliant forms in order to be allowed to use the company’s facilities. For instance there is an age limit for people who intend to operate boats and other watercraft facilities. Allowing minors to operate increases the risk involved and the liability to the company. There should also be signs that direct people in the establishment to avoid accidents. The use of alcohol and drugs should be minimized in the establishment and engaging in adventurous activities under influence banned.
Recruitment and selection
In order to get the best candidates for the job, external recruitment is the best approach that ensures that new talent is brought in the company. The selected candidate should be trained in order to be conversant with the operations at the establishment. The induction process is very crucial as it gives the candidate a chance to familiarize themselves with the new environment and will determine the output of the person (Billsberry, 2008). To increase the work output of employees, various forms of motivation and reward systems should be employed. As stated in 1 Thessalonians 5: 11. There should be encouragement at the workplace. The management should work at building the employees potential and encourage them to deliver. This can be achieved through providing a conducive working environment and setting realistic and achievable goals. They should also reward the people who perform and meet their targets. They should also pay attention to the employees’ views and be slow to anger as stated in James 1: 19.
Understanding the job description and job specification is the first step towards achieving success in a particular job. This contributes to the success of the organization as the employee work output will be high because each employee understands their responsibilities at the workplace. Watercraft rental franchisee should have the knowledge in the field to be able to look for clients and ensure that safety concerns are well addressed.
