It is Haiti in 2010 and the earthquake shaked the entire nation by killing about 220000 people and affect an approximated 3 million people. Bodies of dead people lie everywhere and others are trap in the rubble. Children have lost their parents, parents have lost their children and others are very injured. Some people have lose their limbs and all that can be seen and heared is pain, pure pain. In Iraq, bombings have left many peoples hopeless, injured and others dead. In Gaza, tears of little children and their mothers can be hear as the sound of bombs and bullets take away their loved ones. Back during WWII, millions of Jews died in concentration camps under Nazi Germany. Many more people was killed during the war. The war ended when an atomic bomb was drop on Hiroshima and Nagasaki and many Japanese people were left devastated. The effects of these bombs were big and leave big scars on the people. In the year 2004, a tsunami in the Indian Ocean cause many deaths especially in Thailand. The common thing about all these events presented above is that there was suffering. Some people were become homeless, others were left orphans and others were left with scars that cannot healed in a lifetime. However, one can assuming that these people made hopeless cries while they undergo this suffering. It is common for one to say “Lord help me or God save us from this misery”. However, despite these cries, the suffering still continue. So where is God sometimes if not most of the times in all of this suffering?
When such a question arises, one can only found answers or consoled in the book of Job in the Old Testament of the Bible. Before his trials and tribulations, Job owned land, had a happy family, friends and admirers. According to Job 1:3 (NIV), he was the rich man in the East. However, all of this would went away and God put Job into temptation. Many trials came to him included his property destruction, death of family member, physical ailment on his body, loss of wealth and friends. Chapters 1 and 2 in the book of Job highlighting these trials, temptations and tribulation. And while his wife tried to convincing Job to rebuke the Lord, Job remained steadfast in his faith in the Lord His God. Eventually, God lifted Job from suffering and “ make him prosperous again and give him twice as much as he had before” (Job 42: 10, New International Version).
Several things can be learn from this book. First, it is God who bless us and at the same time He is one who permit Satan to take these blessings away. Second, trials, tribulations and temptations come to us so that we can focus our attention to Him who bless, and not on the particular blessings he give us. Third, trials, tribulations and temptations come from God, not to punishing people but for reasons bigger. Fourth, it is God who giving us blessings and He also giving us grace of triumphing over temptations and suffering. Fifth, it is good to be trust that God will gave us victory over suffering. This means that we persevering in Faith.
Also, something can be pick from Job’s three friends. Eliphaz, Bildad and Zophar go to console Job. God give us good friends who can comforts us when in suffering. Despite Job “cursing the day he become born”, the 3 friends are there to encourages him. Finally, the book of Job showing us that everyone undergoes suffering, but it is not under the wrath of God. This can be seen at the end when God bless Job bid. This means that it is not a punishing that God gave us upon His judging, but it is just a test of our Faith in Him. Therefore, the book of Job provide many lessons about suffering and faith in God. However, are these lessons or answers helpful?
However, these lessons are sometimes not very helping. For example, in the case of a natural disaster such as an earthquake that leaving many people dead, others homeless, others orphaned and others injury, this situation leads people to asked why God should lets them suffer if He love them so much. Such happening and sufferings making people to desperation and they start feel as if God does not loving them. This is why stereotypes such as “God only lives in America and Europe” start crop up because some people suffering too much while others are perceived to rarely undergoing this suffering. People start questions God’s love and care for them and some seeking consolation from other avenues such as witchcraft. However, I believe that if God loves and cares for us, He should taking away the suffering from us.
