The place of women during and after the World War I was changing going by different societies. Each society was changing its perception towards women. They were gaining more rights and privileges compared to the years before. Several changes occurred mainly in Europe where majority of men were involved in the war leaving women back home to take care of their families. This meant that women had to seek employment in places that only men used to work in before. The governments needed to keep their economies stable when a majority of the workforce had gone to the war. Women had to take the places of these men in the Workplace. It ranged from factories, agriculture, transport, commerce and other sectors that required workers during this period. It was common in European countries such as Germany, France, England and many more. As Europe was undergoing changes on its perception towards women so was the rest of the world changing its perceptions toward women.
Latin America just like china, Africa and other parts of the world was also undergoing these changes. In Latin America, the role of women in the society was changing, and this could be seen by the high number of women that were being employed into different places of work. In the U.S, women were being allowed several privileges that had not been seen before. Though men still dominated the society, the voice of women was also being heard as they were fighting for equal opportunities with men. However, in all these societies, women were still facing several difficulties. In Europe, women had to contend with lower wages compared to men though they did the same duties that men were doing before.
Many women were subjected to poor working conditions with lower wages compared to what men used to get. The need to take care of their families in the absence of men made women seek employment in many countries in Europe. The labor laws were not so supportive to the women but with time several changes were made to accommodate the women. In Latin America, several laws were made to protect women laborers and children. In Canada, the prime minister proposed specific reforms that would be passed by the parliament. The reforms included minimum wages, unemployment insurance, public works, abolition of child labor, and housing support among other reforms.
The conditions in Europe were a bit harsh for women compared to the conditions in Latin America. There were several changes after the war, the government instructed employers to lay down the women workers and employ the men that had returned from war. This meant that most women that had been working during the war period were now rendered jobless. It disrupted the lives of previously independent women who were dependent on their jobs as a source of income. This was in contrast to Latin America that did not encounter too many changes in the working sector after the war. The women here still held on to their jobs as the government tried other means to accommodate the men that had returned from war.
Given a choice as a woman, it was much better living in Latin America at this time compared to living in Europe. In Latin America, women were much more liberal and free compared to Europe. Women in America were a little more respected and were not exploited in the work places than the women in Europe. Women had more voice in America as they could engage themselves in political and economic activities than the women in Europe.
