Introduction
Ethics, in any organization are very important because it provides workers with guidelines on how they should behave in the workplace and with one another. Thereby, building trust amongst the workers, which will cause them to work efficiently and generate profits. However, when it comes to the law enforcements the issue becomes dire because it involves the safety and security of people in the community. Therefore, it is very important for the law enforcement in the country to have ethics. This is because the good conduct from the law enforcement officers brings about interaction with the community, thereby, enhancing communication with people in the community. Thus, promoting responsibility, especially when dealing with crime and disorder in the society (Fitch 121). This means that the ethics of police officers occur because they have to deal with life or death situations in everyday life. However, sometimes they make wrong judgments, which jeopardize the community trust on them and threatens the safety of people. Therefore, there is the need for law enforcement officers to make un-biased, law-abiding and non-discriminatory judgments when enforcing the law. However, police officers believe in loyalty among one another, friends and family. This hinders, their judgment when enforcing the law and thus, ends up not doing the right thing all the time. It is a well-known fact that police officers have formed their own sub-culture, which clouds their judgments making them to make unethical choices.
Police officers tend to also favor their friends and family. Therefore, when it comes to enforcement of the law the officers will be biased. Hence, they will make the wrong decisions by breaking all ethical rules such as finding fake evidence to disprove friend’s guilt. This fact means that they could break the law in order to assist a friend. Therefore, to maintain a high level of ethical standard without becoming robotic or unfeeling, simply means that an officer needs to follow all the right protocols and rules. This means that they need to perform their duties in an ethical manner, regardless of whom is being investigated or the victim. However, if the case is too hard for the officer then it is important for them to exclude themselves from the case in order for fair and un-biased investigations to occur (Fitch 121).
In conclusion, ethics of law enforcement officers are very important because it will cause them to work on their jobs without being biased or partial. This will enable even police protection of all people in the society.
